Just read that two senior hockey players got killed the other night travelling home after their game-they hit a moose then bounced into the next lane and hit an oncoming truck. Those moose are bad news in last two years hockey players I coach or their parents have hit three coming and going from games-luckily nobody killed but some hospital time for one set of grandparents. We have a 50 mile gauntlet we have to run on every road trip-it's nice when we take the tour bus better chance of getting through a smackup-but always worried when we travel in separate vehicles. The way moose are built they seem to end up in the car with you when you hit them.

One of the worst wrecks I've ever seen was the winter of 97-98, I was pipelining north of Wabasca, AB. A couple of guys were on their way back to camp late at night, hit a moose calf on the ice road, and it came through the windshield. The guy in the back seat of the crewtruck was pinned behind the seats, and he had to listen to the guys in the front get kicked to death by a thrashing moose calf. The doors and cab were crumpled enough that they couldn't get out, and neither could the moose. It's a sight I'll never forget.
