I had kind of a bad start to the day...I had an old saddle horse- the one my 87 year old uncle rode until he had to hang up his saddle a couple years ago- that I was taking care of...She'd been retired to die on the place...This old cold winter was rough on her- and in the last couple weeks she'd been showing all of her 28 years- and been off her feed..

This morning as the sun came up the wife noticed Trixy was down- so surmising the problem, I grabbed my rifle and went out to check her and she was on her side and couldn't get up...Time to keep her from suffering anymore - but always a tough thing to do...

Got that T-shirt - not a pleasant way to start a day.

You did it right.

I can't shoot'em...I just can't.

I call the vet and we do " the shot".....

It does make ya wanna cry when you have to do things like that!

Tough one OT. I have a reciprocal arrangement with a few neighbors where we do that for each other. I called on them to put down my old dog and none could. Many tears from the vet, wife, me, dad when the "shot" was administered. Didn't seem any better than shooting it.

The good thing is that a couple weeks ago we got a nice enough day that my just under 1 year old granddaughter was out looking things over- and we put her up on old Trixie and took a couple swings around the corral...Old mare seemed to really be enjoying having Peiton a jumping around on her old sway back and jabbering away- so she got a last ride..

Last summer I went out in the pasture to catch a couple saddle horses- and while we were saddling them- that same old mare loaded up in the back of the open trailer...I had to get a halter and lead her out- as she thought she should be going along to help too.....

Sorry about the good old mare, OT. Darn!
It always hurts your heart when you lose the good ones.
That's the part I don't like about
this business. You take care of them and then you have to
'take care of them.'
:cry2: :cry2: :cry2:

I'm glad she didn't suffer.
So many horses, especially now with the slaughter ban, don't
have that ending.

Awww ...... that's so sad. What a tough decision to have to make.

I had a horse that made it to 31. I had the good fortune to own him for 26 of those. The last five years I constantly worried that I'd find myself in the same situation and have to make the big decision. I was actually thankful when one fine morning in May he just laid down and closed his eyes. His big old heart just gave out. It happened so quickly that Hubby thought he laid down to nap in the sun, and when he didn't get up as the tractor drove by, he realized what happened.

Those good old horses are like members of the family, and are usually the ones to which all others are destined to be compared. It sounds like Trixy is one of those special horses.

Yep- this was a bay mare I raised from a foal- A Nifty Win daughter....
I was just remembering when she was a 3 year old- I thru a saddle on her- worked her around the corral about 5 minutes- snubbed her to her sire, climbed on, and took off....About 2 miles into the ride she was going so good my buddy snubbing thru me the lead rope- and off we went just like she was an old saddle horse... Used her working cows the next day...Old pony never had a buck in her- and in her prime could out walk about anything around...

Sorry for your loss! It is sure hard to do but we owe it to em' to not let em' suffer. May ya have lots more good horses. And always keep a special spot for the ones ya miss. Horses are one of God's best gifts! :D

I hope you're able to find a good replacement.Don't know about Montana, but here in Cali/Nevada, we call it Calneva, you can get some really nice horses cheap.I just got two coming two year old fillies given to me yesterday.Went to see them thinking they'd be junk horses and turned out to be nice animals, grade, but well put together.I'll get some pics when i pick them up this weekend.

I'm sorry for your loss. Maybe Trixy and Pretty Penny are keeping each other company now. That's tough losing two favored animals in less than a years time  .

Actually my replacement- Coaly- a 6 year old little black mare- is Trixies last foal- sired by the stud I sold two years ago- Rusty Royal Sugar....My old saddle horse- Zip- that is semi retired- and used mostly by the grandkids now is a full brother to old Trixy- but he's around 25 years old now...
Don't have any pictures of Trix I can find right now...After I broke her I gave her to my uncle- and she was his saddle horse for 20+ years...My kids kind of hated to give her up as she had some fair speed on barrels... Do have lots of pictures of Zip- who was identically marked to Trix.....

Kids live in town- altho the son is looking at building a new house on the place...Grandkids come out every chance they can get- and then often when their parents are working or in college- we get them :D
