Barn Fire

Early this morning my Mom heard a noise and went to investigate and found one of our tin barns was burning. By time they found it, it was pretty much fully shelled. Luckily it was empty. It looks like it started by the breaker box.
 
Well BRG, I can sure feel for you. Watching a barn go up in flames is about the most helpless feeling one can have.

Although you are fortunate that it was empty, it will still make a lot of work cleaning it up and deciding what to do next.

I hope things come together well for you after your loss.
 
That really sucks! Glad ya didnt lose any livestock and nobody got hurt. Electrical fires happen. Hope everyone uses this as a reminder to check connections, size wire properly, use good breakers and keep panels covered and cleaned. AND IF YOUR NOT COMFORTABLE DOING THAT YOURSELF, GET A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN TO LOOK AT IT! Safety First! :D I'm not implying that BRG had gunpowder stored in his breaker box either! Hope all goes well to replace it. :D

We are glad everyone and everything is safe. The funny thing is I thought I had a dream that you guys had a barn fire last night. I told lazy ace about my dream this morning. I think I probably heard the fire page but didn't wake up and so subconsciously I think I knew you had a fire, it just came through in my dreams. He called JR and he said that my dream unfortunately was reality.

Did you lose any corrals?

It's amazing your Mom heard the fire. We talked this morning that if we had a barn fire during the night we'd never know until morning, unless someone would happen to see it going past.

No, all the corrals touching the building are steel, so nothing really lost there. All we had in it were a few small square bales.

Oh well, shirt happens, could always be worse.
 
Glad your losses weren't any worse than the empty barn. I'll second the advise to get an electrician if your not absolutely sure you know what your doing. I've heard some stories about some neighbors wiring buildings without a permit and now they can't get insurance on the building. That's why I just paid the price and had an electrician wire my new shop. That way he has to deal with the inspector if there are problems and the insurance company is happy.
 
About three years ago the Red barn had gremlins in the wiring - - - lights would just shut off then come back on - - -outlets would work when they felt like it.

I had built the barn about 1974 or 1975 qnd back then most of the breaker panels had aluminum power strips. Took it apart for an inspection and it showed signs of arcing to a great extent! Only the good lord kept it from going up in flames. When I replaced the panel the new one is copper!

So sorry for your loss - - - I hope any of you who have panel boxes from the mid 70s will take the time to check them out. Take the cover off ( kill the main first ) and then pull the breakers and make sure everything is in good working order.
