been easier if we could have bought some post holes. then some idiot didn't bore a couple holes straight on the pole for the end of the gate, so went to wood chisel , hammer and sledge hammer to make it fit.
 
Fine job Jody, you will appreciate that for years to come.

We replace a set of corrals this fall at our Morrison Meadow place. They have had the test with weaning and preg testing about 150 cows to see how they worked. A few more big holding pens to build and we will wean and test everything there next year.
 
last big holding pen I made was with 21 foot poles , a tie every 20 feet with a big post in the center, I used 5 foot high no climb fence a pole in the middle and a pole on top, . use log screws to put up the poles.
 
Thats a job well done sure looks nice. Now if I had such a nice gate I might hang a sign from a couple chains in the center of that gate with my ranch name and brand.
add how many hours do you have in building that gate? I like the ranch look of it

With help about a day, have to let the bore bit cool between holes

use a draw knife to tendon the pole , if you keep it sharp it goes faster
 
Our wood bore still has a wooden T handle to power it. Although I miss the look of rail gates around the place I've gotten to like the steel ones for no maintenance and longevity.
 
Really nice work Jody. Sometimes in a job like that, looking at it and using a working gate gives a reward that is far greater than the work it took to do the job.
