PLEASE HELP US HELP SHORTY AND HER FAMILY

Eleven horses and a dog died in a blaze that destroyed a barn and riding arena in Leduc County yesterday, leaving a family that has built a life around horses wondering how to carry on. "There were flames coming out of the windows and doors (of the barn)," said 16-year-old Keellie Kallechy, awakened at 6 a.m. by her mother, Cindy, reporting the barn was on fire.
The family called 911 and raced out to watch the barn, tack room and riding arena burn. Keellie, her sister Ellisha and mother ran to the back to try to find a way to free the trapped horses and a dog from the engulfed buildings. "It was too hot to do anything," said Keellie.

The horses - including two mares, a stud horse, three yearlings and five foals - died. The family's pet Rottweiler, named Seven, also perished in the blaze. "She was a sweetie," said Keellie. "She was my mom's protector." The Kallechys run Kallecho Ranch near Highway 14 and Range Road 225, southeast of Edmonton, where they raise and train show horses.

Cindy has been in the business all her life, said her daughter. Cindy was too upset to come to the phone and talk. "We have no equipment," said Keellie. "Everything we worked so hard for, it's all gone." With no equipment and no buildings to house their other horses, the Kallechys aren't sure what to do with the remaining 39 animals.

"It's going to be foaling season soon and we have nowhere to put the babies," Keellie said.
