Big footrot outbreak in Minnesota

We have had our worst year ever for footrot this year. Usually we get only one or 2 here and there throughout the year. last year we had none. This year it is crazy. we have had over 10 animals on a pasture of 50 cow calf pairs get it and 6 head on the 70 head feedlot. All of our cattle get more than adequite mineral and salt including zinc and way more than the recommended rate of organic iodide. This year- it isnt enough. We had the local feed-nutritionist out the other day and he said it is all over the northern half of minnesota this year: on farms that have never had a problem before. (what's really weird is that on my uncles farm a few miles away he hasn't had one case yet this year- and his cattle are in mud all the time)

He is having us feed Chlortetracycline medicated feed to them for a week to try to knock it out of them- as we are having new cases every day or 2. The ones that get lame from it are getting shots of oxytet- LA-200. It seems to be a superbug this year though and sometimes takes more than one treatment.

Is anyone else out there having this much trouble?????

I've got a little over 200 head on pasture south of my house and it sounds about like your deal.

300 some head north of the road and haven't really had to doctor much on them.

Go figure.

We've treated a dozen or so out of 500 cows between myself and a friend's herd we work together on them.No real outbreak just enough for ropeing practice.Have had a little pinkeye just in the cows not the calves.

I do feed a mineral with CTC in it but thats not a 100% bulletproof..

If they are watering in a tank, try spreading lime around the base in a ten foot radius.

Well since u have been feeding the CTC that is probably why u haven't had many. I didn't know they made a mineral with it in. What is it and how spendy is it???

I have heard it may be bad for immunity to feed the anti-biotics all the time though.

what will this do??? Kill bacteria???

I don't know what it does for sure, but it helps.

Only problem is my tanks have been running over and I can't get them dried up enough to scatter the lime!

I am feeding Vigortone 3V4S-CTC it is costing $18.50 per bag I have some on hand as I sell it also.We had a terrible time with footrot and pinkeye 2 summers ago switched to this mineral 1 1/2 years ago and the cattle have been pretty trouble free since then.

Where do u get this mineral??? I don't think anyone sells it around this area. That is a dollar a bag cheaper than the mineral i am now feeding. I suppose u have to buy a large amount to get that price???

what i am worried about is if they will eat it- they are real finicky on there salt and mineral- one type they will eat like crazy and the other they won't touch. They have really liked what i am feeding now- i know it does a good job for the breeding back but it isn't doin the job on the foot rot.

well i will have to look into it some more and get back to u. My current supplier may have something simmiler. although it sounds like your prices are a tad better. Thanks for your help and i'll get in touch with u if i want some.

Yep, it's definitely an outbreak this year just over the border from MN. We had our first case in late April...we never have a case that early. In the last two weeks it has shot off and probably about 10% of the herd has it. Doesn't seem to be a superbug though. Oxytet is working on it.

Oxytet is working for us too- it just is taking more of it and longer for them to get over it. we had to treat another calf today :(

one of the first calves that got it about a month ago still hasn't gotten over it. we brought her in to the barn and are keeping her there now and treating with penicilian for the last 2 weeks. She is starting to eat now finally. she was in bad shape. am tube feeding her milk once a day as she is to bullheaded to suck on a bottle or drink it.

We have had about 3 cases on calves this year, maybe 4 which is 3, maye 4 more than usual.. One cow got it which is about par for the course, actually, we generally get 3-4 adults who get it.. Almost no pink eye this year (One cow) which is a miracle of sorts, lol.. Have had to lance three abcess this year on calves which is new to me.. Something is getting into their cheeks or necks (This was before any shots so I can't blame myself for bad shot placement)..

If you can, take some pics of what you are talking about so we can compare notes,...sounds like it might be the same thing we have been battling for years....still no idea what it is either. :???:
