Well I aint told a story in a while and the talk about snakes and my little girl I call bannycat pickin berrys has brung one up out of my febble mind.its hard to tell as it involes a death of 2 youngins. One, long ago that only a scant few remember. One, in my life time. Well, here it goes. When I was a youngin of 10 and younger. Hit wernt nothin for me and my 6 cusins to load up in grandaddys jeep with him and granny and go pic blackberrys, blueberrys, mayhaws, wild plums or grapes. Grandaddy stayed in the woods cowhuntin and always new where everything was ripe. Pickin blackberrys, u always needed to watch for rattlers layin to get them a bird and granny was always gettin after us to look good and sometimes we'd find one. Grandaddy would shoot him but granny would call a halt to the berry pickin. Shed go into a panic and get mad if we would not leave. We all just figered she was scard of a snake. So our best berry pickin was when she wernt with us. She made a kind of cobbler called blackberry dooby thats a well none cracker dish that we all loved and still do. I new that her and grandaddy had lost a baby son, sambo when he was only 2 but such was not talked about in our family. It was just left alone to try and be foregot. I found out, years later, sambo had been snakebite and died in a model( a) headed to cross city to dr. And granny had never overed it. Them were hard times back then but when my parents lost my 3 year old brother we like to have never overed it. If it weren't for the grace of god we would not have.

I was out today weaning calves and saw a bunch of blackberries. I did see one snake but it was a corn snake. Scared my wife but I'm sure we scared him too. Sure was hot out too!

We picked a bunch of blueberries today. Tomorrow morning they will hopefully be muffins. We've also got a big garden and picked some sweet corn and had it for dinner.

All in all a very good day. Sounds like yours was too.

One of the angus bulls has come up lame. There's no swelling and no cuts but he sure enough limps on the front left leg. I wonder if it is a shoulder. I wondering if he had an awkward dismount and hurt himself. We'll know if a week or so whether he stays or gets a ride to town.

Yea, those awkward dismounts will get you every time! :D

Cowhunter, we have a lot of blackberries right now but rattlers aren't very prolific over in this region. Those Hognose snakes do hang around and to those who don't know what they are, they can scare the heck out of someone. If you have a decent recipe for blackberries, I'd like to see it. Most of the ones I ate were too seedy. My dad used to make blakberry wine with them until one day the cork blew out of the jar and sprayed blackberry juice all over the kitchen. Mom put an end to the wine makeing. :(

I'll check with my wife about how to make it but its whole berry's so it will be seedy. Its a kind a got dumplins in it. My wife promised some this week if I'm good.
