We worked our calves and vaccinated our cows prior to sending them out on grass for the summer. The nice part about being a little outfit is it sure didnt take very long.
This kid needed an intoxication test as she was going the wrong way on the highway.
We have a home built calf table i got from a wonderful neighbor who was hanging up his spurs and retiring from the cows business. It works really well. Someday, we'll get it painted a color other than aged steel. Our crew consisted of my wife and I, the kids and my Dad-in-law. Vaccinated and branded them all and castrated the single bull calf we got this year. Somebody must be telling us it's time to expand the cowherd. The snowpack on the mountain behind us is shrinking by the minute. Feels like June already. :?
Don't ya hate going to the doctor and having to wait around in the waiting room? This is our version of said waiting area. But on the bright side, none of our patients were ill!
On my to-do-list this year is to build a permanent chute off of my alley which will connect to the calf table. It will make it a little easier and i am all about easier. Getting ready to put an H on another one.
Letting the smoke out of some cowhide. Please be kind to the fat guy holding the branding iron. I almost didnt post this picture as my vainity is pretty disgusted with how well i wintered.
Middle age plain sucks! But i WILL do something about it soon.
Finished product when hot iron and hide meet. I managed to not burn a single fat roll while doing so.
The kids wanted to play a bigger role so they were on the shot committee. Littlest H gave 8 way and did a fine job even if his dad micro-managed the operation.
Little H gave the vira-shield 6. It's a pretty sad ranch that can only afford one good syringe! But she did fine with the limited equipment available. Hopefully, when she becomes a large animal vet someday, i can get a discount on another one. The kids are quite good little hands if i do say so myself. What makes me really proud is when some of our neighbors call this time of year and ask me to bring the wife and kids to help work calves.
Making a steer. He was from a set of twins. Sold his brother to a neighbor needing a graft. Ended up with 9 calves on 8 cows. Only one bull calf. Hopefully the heifers all look good come fall. We shall see. Told ya the table needs a paint job.
My dad-in-law putting a brand on his calf. I convinced him he needed a cow or two just so i could get his help when we work ours. 8) I am a tricky devil when it comes to stuff like that.
4 Days after we got them worked, we hauled them to our summer pasture. The grass is coming but like lots of folks, we could sure use some rain. But after seeing how bad other places are, i feel like we have it pretty good. My in-laws hauled the calves and i took the cows.
Another shot of a fat guy trying to open a gate to a stock trailer. Atleast i have good help.
Pointed them at the water trough and opened the gates. They paired up fine and put their heads down and started ingesting grass at a rapid pace. Bout' time they earned their own living!
Hitting the ground on thier summer home. Just a little bunch of cows but i know the guy who owns them. Like Corb Lund says.......May you always have cows around!
Turning loose the youngsters. Grass, water and cedars trees for cover. They have it pretty good i'd guess. Mom-in-law acting as a hazer.
Are you my mama? Have you seen her? Nevermind, there she is!
Stretching thier legs and inspecting the salad bar. I should follow their example. Have a fine evening and here's hoping we all get the moisture we need.
