That's quite a hill behind the bull in the third pic. Where are you located? Looks like nice country.

We are in the Madison Valley in southwest MT. The hill is what we call the bench between the flats where we live and the river bottom. Its great country if you don't weaken. :D

 Can't sleep been Dr'ing my daughter over the phone...stomach flu.Anyway cowboy-up beautiful pics, you know any pic with a mountain gets my vote. Bull looks good, better if he was red but heck you can't have it all :p In Canada eh we use snow to sled on....looks like fun though.Thx for sharing and making me homesick for mountains

Good looking cattle you have.I like that bull I had one just like him but He got a new home last week so I'm about out of bulls for sale now.

that is one heck of a stack of hay you got there! what is the price for cow hay in your country?

That is actually my straw stack. I've got close to 800 bales of it. It was supposed to be gone a long time ago but the guy hasn't got it yet. Cow hay really varys here. I've bought about 400 ton of two year old hay for 45 dollars a ton but I sold most of my rained on hay for 65. Grain hay runs around 50 to 55. I had about 200 acres of second cutting hay that wasn't rained on and got eighty for that but I had to peel the tops off and also got eighty for my third cutting. Horse hay in small bales is a hundred a ton. All in all this was the worst hay year I've had with everything averaging out at about 3.8 ton per acre.

I agree with PureCountry.....I like the cows, the kid and the scenery better than the bull. He just doesn't seem to have the base and the power that I like to see in bulls.

I really wish he had a little heavier hindquarters, I was kinda hoping he would grow out a little better. He is only getting about three pounds of whole oats a day and second cutting grass and alfalfa. Thanks for your comments I've still got three months to decide if I want to use him or cut his head off.

Well you kept him for a reason-most breeders would of 'built' a butt end on him. Run him on a set of poorer cows see if he improves them. He's a bit straight in the back legs too I guess. At worst you've got a spare bull that didn't cost you much.

Why would you breed him to poorer cows? You would be wasting a year. He should not be used by anyone. Sell him and buy another bull for $1500, it'll be better than this one. He has no top in him at all.

Cowboyup,

I think I would give that bull a chance. You havent pushed grain at him hard so hes not going to be one of these lil fatty buggers a lot of Purebred guys try to push off on people as herd bulls that go out and melt like a stick of butter. He looks good to me!

My question would be: "What is he and what do you know for sure
about the genetics behind him"?

He looks like some kind of crossbred to me.

He is out of a cow I call clown face by range bull. She is a cow I have run for four years for the guy that I've been running cows for. I traded the pick of my herd for him. I think he is out of a vermillion ranch bull that was long and framey but doesn't have great hindquarters. He was an oops so there was only 3 bulls to choose from and he doesn't resemble the other two at all. He weighed about eighty five pounds at birth as I carried him across two creeks to get him to a safe and warm place after he was born. This cow has brought in one of the top calves every year that I've run these cows. You can see a distant view of the cow he is out of in Ranchwife's photos. She is the spotted face cow behind the red one.

I don't want to feed him into something I would like but would rather he grow into it on his own. I will give him every oppurtunity but if he doesn't make it he will eat good. Just makes me wonder what the quarter hereford blood would do in a cross.

With enough feed poor cattle look good.I would much rather use a bull like yours than some pile of crap with 2 ton of grain ran through him..

I have to agree with Denny. I've seen absolute garbage cattle coming into the feedlot turn out to look pretty darn good with enough fat layered on to hide all the faults. Your bull is out of one of your top cow, so I would give him a chance to prove himself.
