calving pens

Well, up to this year we have had 4 stalls. Room for about 7-8 cows if we doubled up. We generally run between 120 and 150 cows.

This year (see my other post) we will have at least 9 stalls. That sure will be nice if it is a nasty spring!

I have no pens just a barn and 40 portable panels. I can make up enough pens in a hurry but were calveing a bit later this year so hopefully I won't need them.

one barn with 4 stalls, have made one more in the alley, have made a xouple pens in the loafing shed next to it, UseA OLD BARN MORE BIG PEN IN BACK i PUT 4 PAIRS IN JUST TO GET OUT OF THE STORM IN ONE BIG PEN THEN 5 OTHER PENS IN THAT BARN. BEEN YEARS WHEN I only used a barn a night or 2 and there been nights when there 15 head pen up.

was just wondering how many inside pens you all have and how many cows you all calve out ? Basically what % of you cow herd can be in the barn at one time

Less that 2%, if 10% total have to go through the barn it has been a trying year.

We have individual box stalls for 5% of the herd if need be, in three different barns. Back when Peach and I were starting up ranching in the early 1980's, we had 10% of our herd calve in one 24 hour period. This was during a terrible snowstorm the last week in March. We didn't have any individual box stalls at the time, but had about 40 baby calves in a barn without their mothers. There was mass confusion when we let them out to suck twice a day. The snow was so deep on the roof of the barn that I considered going out in the middle of the night to shoot a high-powered rifle to avalanche the snow off the roof. Fortunately I waited until daybreak, and then better sense prevailed. :-)

We have about 40 stalls in 3 barns, and have 2 cows, that have never been in a barn. Its sounds like when they did have their own cows here, just about everything went through the barn.
My neighbor to the west has 6 stalls for 900 head, and the only time any of his see the inside is if a cow has problems, or during a BIG storm he will shove calves in. 2 years ago, we went over and helped him try to pair up about 60 calves that were in the barn. Did ok on about 40 of them, the rest we made pairs up.
