Canadian ranchers/cattlemen - better have a look here and see what the new code of practice includes. If accepted as written, you will be in violation if you are wintering pairs licking snow only, if I'm reading it right. This does not affect me, but there was discussion a while ago on here about this very thing.
I might be paranoid, but I see this kind of thing as a tool that the SPCAs will use to hang us. You either know how to raise cattle or you don't. And having a detailed code like this will do nothing to stop those who are not inclined to manage their cattle well anyway.
As always, the devil is in the details.
A written code has little impact on good producers or bad producers. It does, however, become a weapon in the hands of the misguided, while offering little protection to those who might appeal to it for defense.
