Canadian health officials to examine new 'live' BSE test

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency will review a new test for bovine spongiform encephalopathy that its developers claim can detect the disease using only a blood sample. But the CFIA warned that no matter what the demand for such a test, there is a strict protocol that has to be followed and that the manufacturer's prediction that the test could be on the market by fall was probably optimistic.

Vacci-Test Corp., Calgary, Alberta, claims that its test has been accurate when used with infected blood samples from the Veterinary Laboratories Agency in Weybridge, England, where samples from the most recent suspected BSE case in the United States are being tested, as well as the French Food Safety Agency. According to the company, the tests were applied to infected and uninfected blood and were accurate every time.
