Just completed our bull sale catalogue. Here is the link for those of you that may wish to have a peek http://www.watsoncattle.ca/pages/catalogues.html

Cattle look real good. I know the stress it takes to put a sale together. In your photos is that Barley ? If so do you chop it and what variety is it. I'm thinking of trying 25 acres to chop this summer barley or oats. But I'd like some tonnage if I do.

you are right per. Triticale with Italian Rye under-seeded. Silaged just over 12 t per acre and the Italian rye was about mid thigh when i cut it to swath graze in the winter. As far as a truck load of money... leanin h I will be happy to get all the bulls sold and average $2500.

Elwapo, I switched to all Angus all the time a few years ago for calving ease and several other reasons. I came from Angus/Fleckvieh and liked the resulting calves but not the slower get up and go of the continental calves. How would the Gelbvieh compare to the Flecks?

I had a small pb herd of semis many years ago and had the same experience with the large calf size. The smaller frame size and good performance attracted me to the Gelbvieh. The gel/red angus cross simply cant be beat in my mind, although I have seen some absolutely smashing semi / angus cross females. Gelbvieh was one of the last continental breeds to come to Canada and they never did catch up in popularity to the semis and chars.

We ran Gelbvieh bulls for 2 years on our Angus cross cows and still have a few cows from that cross. Sure added some milk and muscle, just like we thought it would. I'd use Gelbvieh bulls long before I'd use Simmental. To me Gelbvieh give a great continental kick without sacrificing maternal traits.

In fact, I was ready to head out to Elwapo's sale about 6 years ago, when I got a "family emergency" call.

Elwapo - do you know Harold Fieldburg?

Would Harold be Wendy's Dad?

That renegade bull sure is the type of Gelbvieh that appeals to me. We have been crossing Gelbvieh with our Angus red and black since the mid 70's. With the right type it can really work.
