CATRON COUNTY WOLF ORDINANCE IN PLACE
Opponents Fear an Excuse to Slaughter Wolves
RESERVE, N.M. On February 7th 2007, with over 200 citizens in attendance, the Catron County Commission passed Ordinance 001-2007, An Ordinance Setting Forth Wolf-Human Incident Emergency Protective Measures. A standing ovation followed the unanimous vote.
Habituated wolf-human encounters continue at an increasing rate with no protections provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and have been recorded by the County's Wolf Interaction Investigator. Parents and officials are increasingly concerned for the safety of children. The Reserve School Board is looking for funding to build protective enclosures at bus stops so school children have a wolf-proof, safe place to wait for the bus.
Psychological trauma due to wolf events on private property has been documented in families that live in the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area. A child psychologist who interviewed thirty five residents documented moderate to severe trauma, including nightmares, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, bedwetting, hopelessness, helplessness, children afraid to go out of the home, fear for siblings.
County Ordinance 001-2007 is directed at the removal of documented habituated, fearless, and aggressive wolves. Upon documented evidence of physical and/or psychological effects by medical and/or mental health professionals, the Catron County Commission will issue a dispatch order and demand the immediate removal of the identified offending wolf by US Fish and Wildlife Service, and USDA Wildlife Service. If the offending wolf is not removed within 24 hours, the commission shall direct the County Wolf Interaction Investigator to remove the wolf immediately through the dispatch order.
The County's actions are a last resort after having unsuccessfully tried to have the wolf agencies remove the threats of habituating wolves to families and children.
