Cawboy hat questions

Ok, I will come out and say that I'm no rancher, far from it.. but I do ride a horse on occasion, and love to be outdoors, either hiking, hunting or bird spotting.. For a while now, I've been wanting to get a cowboy hat to replace my ugly Tilly that I use to keep cool under the AZ sun, and dry when outside in the occasional rain.

I wanted to get some advise, and looked and looked for on-line info, and there really wasn't much other than store after store selling Stetsons, Resistol, Baily, etc..

I want a top quality hat that will age well and last me a life time (I'm in my mid 30's).. I don't mind spending a lot (Stetson 100X as a limit).

Anyone care to give me some advise?

and.. Why is Beaver so important? How many X's do I need to get a lot of Beaver felt, 10, 20, 30, 100?

Lastly, will I be a "wannabe cowboy" if I wear a western hat, even though I'm no rancher?? Heck, I don't even like most country music recorded after 1970 "Today's Country" ...as an acoustic guitar fan, I do love the older stuff though!

Buy one that feels good when you put it on and that your spouse likes. Who cares what anyone else thinks. Better to be a wannabe than a not at all.
 
Mackey hats in Shell Wyoming make a good hat. There are a few traditional type hat makers around, Miles City and Belle Fouche. I guess if money is no object buy the best you can afford as they usually last longer. Beaver seems to be the gold standard.

Yep- I like Mackey's- but they will cost you $300-500...Well made, good fitting, long lasting hats tho.....

8) He is right-again,more yu spend longer it will last.More X's usually mean more beaver--but have seen some that cheat, so best to go to a brand name store and ask.

Good point, but I both love the color, and don't really expect to wear it in very hot weather anyway.. I am thinking about doing the vent holes, I wonder were I can get that done correctly here in Phoenix?

Thanks for the tip but I REALLY hate straw hats, I'd just sooner keep my Tilly a bit longer. I really don't plan on being out in temps hotter than 75 or 80 degrees with it. I might get a lighter color and use it in the summer, and keep the black for winter or "dress"..

Curious, what did they wear on the old days? Seems like only the Mexican Sumbraro was the spun hat back in those days..

they wore whatever they could get their hands on/afford.hats were utilitarian in them days and were for function not fashion...less'n you was an eastern tenderfoot sum b!t<h...
