I was thinking a day or so ago about why I'm who I am. And this poem was born. Thought some of y'all might hear what I am saying
Chosen
This life chose me,
Long before I was even born.
When the first cowboy saddled his horse,
On an early Texas morn.
Just one act was destiny,
For folks like me and you.
It set our course, it mapped our fate,
Addiction through and through.
Cattle are in my DNA,
The horse he rules my life.
And the lonely open spaces,
Call to me like drum and fife.
Give me sage and desert.
Give me silence without fail.
Give me a green broke mustang,
And turn me loose on desert trail.
I made a choice to be a rancher,
While I was still in mothers womb.
If you placed me in a city,
I'd rather be laid out in a tomb.
By the measure of the banker,
I am broke and damn sure poor.
But this freedom and the lifestyle,
Isn't found near vaulted door.
Give me days a horseback,
Summers heat or winter chill.
Give me wild desert cattle,
And my destiny I'll fulfill.
I was born to ranch and cowboy.
I was blessed and set apart,
The high desert came a flirting,
She stole my soul and stole my heart.
And in the early evening breezes,
In the dusking of the day.
As the stars start to show themselves,
And the horses eat their hay.
I'll stand in admiration,
Of the beauty that surrounds.
In awe of God's creation,
And contentment here abounds.
I really didn't have a choice,
I couldn't a seek a better life.
Shaped and sharpened by this landscape,
Like a whetstone does a knife.
Grateful for kids and cattle.
To God I'll always be in debt.
Cause if there's a better way to live,
Well I sure ain't found it yet.
