A SANDHILLS CHRISTMAS DAY
There's a skiff of snow across the corral
where I throw the horses hay.
Chores were started alittle early 'cause
it's a Sandhills Christmas Day.
Across the meadow green soapweeds
stud the whitened hills.
Black cattle trail single file
down to turning mills.
The tractor started alittle slow
but there's hay and cake to feed.
Of course the kids think
I'm taking more time than I need.
There's a load of wood on a calf sled
drug up by saddlehorn.
The smell of woodsmoke from the chimney,
tells you the house is warm.
I see the kids have done their chores,
fed the dogs, the cats, the calf.
As I stomp into the mud porch,
I can hear my family laugh.
All gathered in the living room
with hopes and eyes a-quiver.
Presents stacked under a cedar tree
that we've cut down by the river.
But before the gifts are opened
and filled stockings taken down.
I open up the Bible as
the family gathers 'round.
We turn to the Gospel of Luke
and once again I read the story,
of our Savior being born
and how he came to us in glory.
Then we say a prayer and we give thanks
for the soldiers over seas.
Who answered the call of duty
and have sacrificed to keep us free.
And before the presents are passed out
we wish for nothing less.
Then for everyone a Sandhills Christmas
and we pray that God will bless.
Merry Christmas from the Saddletramp household
and we hope everyone has a great New Year. :santa:
