Figured it was time to clean up the saddle. I use Leather New and neatsfoot oil.

What do you use?

Any tips for the rawhide stirrups? They could use a little whitening up.

Anybody use Ray Holes Saddle butter?

Those magic sponge erasers that Mr Clean makes, really does raw hide up like brand new. Perdy and white.

Can't remember the name of the stuff we use on our saddles before oilin them with neatsfoot oil.......used the last of it here while back and threw the bottle away. It was a pump sprayer.......and a good ole denture toothbrush works good on tooled areas.

I use Fiebings Saddle Soap and Neatsfoot oil.

Haven't got any rawhide, so I don't need to worry about that stuff.

I try to go through all the tack once a year. Sometimes will do bridles twice. Found a stirrup leather that was almost cut through (up high) doing them up last year. Probably saved myself a nasty surprise.

Murphy's Oil Soap and Lexol Leather Conditioner. Lotta elbow grease, a lightly damp sponge, and you can put one of the best cleaning jobs ever on that saddle in about 3 hours. That's the method I used for years when I rode English and had to have all my tack perfect for shows; works well for Western saddles/bridles too.

I've also used Neatsfoot for conditioning and liked that too, though I'm currently undecided if it soaks in and protects as well as the Lexol does.

That elbow grease is the ingredient that works best.

there is an old saddle maker in bandera TX that will take your saddle apart, clean it then put it back together,I hear he is pretty fair priced, might try him in a week or two.

LAZY

Thanks for the Magic eraser tip Lilly. Sure whitened up the stirrups but I think the real magic is how those erasers disappear. :D

Yeah they do disappear rather fast. But for a job like rawhide...ain't nothin I've come across that'll get it that white that quick.

Haymaker.....there's a fella here that cleans saddles like that too. Literally takes the thing apart, cleans it...then puts it back together. The really bad one's....he'll take to the car wash after they are taken apart.....and wash em. Then takes em back to the saddle shop, and cleans em again with saddle soap....oils them as he's puttin it all back together. Last time I was in there....maybe a year ago....he was chargin $45 to do all that.

$45 sounds like a good deal to have one cleaned right, bout once a year.
good luck

We have a great guy in town go over the saddles to see if they require any repair and then he cleans them all up. He does a great job and it's a great visit.

Neighbor had a leather repair shop. Don't know what his kids did with the machines, sewing, punchers too spotter.
He would hot oil soak harnesses, and he took a few saddles apart for us and fixed and cleaned.
Guess there another old outfitter doing the same thing, but not as many harnesses as most the feed teams are gone with the big square and round bales.
