Commercial Maine Anjou and Maine Angus Genetics?

My cousin likes Maine influenced cattle. He has run some 3/8 Maine 5/8 Angus bulls for quite a few years now. And the results have been fairly good. His cow base is predominately angus and the little bit of maine has helped weaning weights. The calves have a nice square hind quarter and seem to carry more muscling down into the hocks. Adds a little more bone too. I cant think of many maine type heifers he has retained. He sticks to angus there. A good friend of mine has an angus/simmy based herd and runs angus, simmy and maine bulls. His cattle are bigger framed to begin with. But those maine calves sure stand out in the pen. Square, thick, soggy calves that sure sell well each fall. In both cases, neither guy has to try much to sell thier calves. Hope that helps some. :D

They were real popular around here about 10 years ago. Havnt heard to much about them lately. One local guy that used to sell breeding stock retired or quit or went broke. Not sure which. So that might be part of the reason. Some of the better fair calves usually had some maine in them back then also.

You might get a few real wild colored calves by using Maine cross bulls, or even if you keep any Maine cross heifers for cows.

So did you get any wild colors out of the ones you used a few years ago? I'm pretty sure that a few of those bulls you got from Dale a few years ago were Maine influenced.

Bred cows for a neighbor 4 seasons, we used a lot of Maine bulls, kept heifers, he still using bulls we bred. Puts over 100 head a year on superior, works just fine. We used bulls with some maternal in them, would think it would work just fine.
