Cow Dog Wanted

I know a lady that raises Kelpies and Heelers. She's got some pretty good bloodlines. Shes down by Moose Jaw. PM me if you're interested and I can give you her info.

I have 10 puppies that are 3/4 border collie and 1/4 blue heeler that should make tremendous cow dogs and ready to go around christmas too and you would really be amazed at the price also!

Hey Pure, do you have your heart set on a pup? When I have it to do over again I'll buy a dog already trained. That way I don't have to deal with a puppy again (cute I know, but 1 1/2 yrs of chewing, jumping up, teething, and all the rest of the trials and tribulations that come with puppies) and can go straight to work with a more mature dog and avoid the potential disaster of a 'green' pup....... FWIW

I suppose it dends on where you are, but I've seen them from $800 to $1,500 around here. Cheaper than a horse and just as effective. I think you could spend more, you can send a dog out to a trainer for somewhat less than you would a horse. I suppose it depends on how far along you expect your new dog to be when you put him to work.

yikes  i don't doubt they are worth it, but i sure don't think i could get myself to dish out that much. although at the present time we got about a 3 month old 3/4collie 1/4 blue heeler pup...so depending on the day, that could sound cheap  :?

Sounds like a bargain to me. Reminds me of how much I miss my dog. Bottom line is there as some who are smart enough to train a dog and some whom the dog is smarter than the trainer.

If I had the time I'd like nothing better than to train up my own cow dogs. I've got a pretty good handle on my Aussie bench, but her son (1/2 Collie) is 1 yr old now and doesn't know anything. And I don't have the time to do much about it. I have to have a job to pay for my ranching habit, so time is at a premium.
I find many folks have no problem forking out $6-10K for a 4 wheeler and have a fit about paying 3 or 4K for a good working ranch horse or $1,500 for a good working cow dog.
Personally I wouldn't pay that much for a horse or dog either if I had the time to put into them myself. Which may explain my greenbroke horses and dogs

i personally have never owned what i would consider a "working cow dog" so i probably don't know what i'm missing. the last couple dogs we've had were good pets, but thats about it. most of that being my fault, not spending the time with them like i should have. i'm going to try to do a better job on this new pup. time will tell...she's still a pup and will act like one for sometime, but she learnin' and getting better everyday.

Best thing to train them on is sheep with no fence for them it worked on our last one real well. You have to spend the time though.

They are like good horses though you should always have a good backup. Oue female died in July to anaplas and were sitting here with a 3 month old pup.If you've never had a good dog you won't miss them but once you've had a good one you won't be without. Unless you don't have a backup dog like me..

I have time and am looking forward to training my new pup after our last beloved girl Steffie died of cancer in Aug. . We managed to get this gal and will be picking her up at Christmas ( a great present for hubby and me)... She is a pup from Dale and Dawn Montgomery.

This will be our new border collie, she is sired by 2 time world stock dog champion Tex and the dams pedigree has the famous Gyp in her. Her dam Kia is a working cattle dog.

This is why I love the internet - I can shop for things without actually touching them. If I went driving around looking at pups and colts all over the country, I'd come home with everyone I saw. They all look so darn cute, then they grow up.

We worked extensively with border collies on our sheep in Scotland but never used them much on the cattle there. Now I like to have a dog to help me with the cattle - more cattle, fewer helpers here. Never had much success buying trained dogs as I find they work great for the trainer but don't transfer so well to someone else. I like a smart border collie of the old type - the kind that could think for themselves and knew what was expected of them automatically. Unfortunately the border collie breed has largely been ruined by the "sheep dog trial" circuit. They have selected them to the point most are "creepers" that can't think for themselves.
I have an old heeler x border collie at the moment and he has just about half the brains of any border collie I've ever owned  Still he has plenty heart and has done OK for a freebie from the pound.
