You often hear of the importance of the maternal side of an animal... Saw it often both with breeding horses and cattle... And each of us have our own cow families we favor...
A few years back when I was looking for some more heifers to buy Taylor Orr (Whitney Creek Ranch) told me of this Mary cow family that he had a heifer calf out of- and how good he thought she may be...
This is the Whitney Creek Mary 845 ( Bannon of Wye UMF 8420 X W C R Mary 6265)- and so far Taylor has been right.. She has weaned 2 heifer calves that averaged 624lbs and 2 bulls that averaged 686- a birth ratio of 97 and a weaning ratio of 109... And this year she again is raising a nice bull calf that traces back 3 times to Bannon of Wye... We kept a 2011 double bred Bannon of Wye son out of her and have about 30 calves sired by him this year...
All this out of a little 4 to 5 frame cow that will never weigh over 1200 lbs...
This is her first daughter that we kept- L B B Mary 01X (sired by O C C Magnitude 805M)... She has done a good job with the calves she has raised.. 01X first daughter- 312- was also kept in the herd and will calve in the spring...
And this is 845U's other daughter- L B B Mary 205 (sired by Lazy Bar B Juanada Rito 06X) with her first calf- a bull sired by Three Trees Prime Cut 0145... From the looks of the calf- she could follow in her mothers footsteps...
