When do you vaccinate your cowherd, and what with? I know we've been through this before but there are always new ideas. We've always used Bovishield Gold + VL5 at branding. But there have been articles saying that it can delay heat. I think the study was in heifers that had not been vaccinated before. Also have seen articles saying if you do it a preg checking you can get abortions from the IBR part of the vaccine...that and that the vibrio won't last until breeding season.

Same as Jody. I tried giving it in the fall, but felt it did cause a few abortions. As I understand, the whole concern giving it pre-breeding is to give it enough time in advance because in a small percentage of animals, it can cause temporary uterine inflammation.

ViraShield 6 + VL5, TrichGuard, Piliguard Pinkeye-1. Everything at spring branding 30 to 40 days prior to breeding. Would like to do it all at preg check in fall so that i wouldnt have to run cows thru in the spring but vet said I wouldnt get the protection when i need it the most and it seems to be working well, and also i like to worm spring and fall so i would have to run thru alley anyway in spring still.

We are going to try the MLV with Presponse when we give scour shots prior to calving this year. Presponse as it has been shown to give calves a better immunity to Pasturella for up to 3 months of age in utero and through the colostrum.

All these companies have good insurance plans should things go not according to Hoyle. Our herd has been on an MLV program for 15 years now. I don't foresee any problems

Wish us luck.

We do vaccinate with an 8-way every 3 years also.

That sounds interesting Dave, keep us posted. That seems like a good time to give it. Interesting you only have to give 8way every 3 years. Lot's of people here give it twice a year. Several have lost cows to redwater in the last year. Some are saying it is from using the 2 ml version.
