Heard today that the North barn in Yankton SD sold all natural, 1400 pound fats for $1.82/pound. Something like 2760/head. Then a bit later today, I heard that the barn in Platte SD sold some 260 pound bull calves for $960/ calf.
Thats all hear say but sounds scary to me.

So LazyWP, how did the horse sale go? My heart was there, but my butt was in the saddle riding ol' Goose, sorting out pairs to trail to Zale's. Horse sales to me are more entertaining than watching a rodeo, and much more fun than enduring watching a ballgame. Hope you and Lisa had a good time there.

Lisa went and I stayed home, and she even behaved. She didn't stick around long enough to watch any of the horses sell. Said there were a few bulls that sold while she was still there that brought 1 buck 36.
She had to brand inspect some stuff south of Cody and here at home, so she couldn't stick around.

My neighbor just bought 270 pairs out of Wyo for $1950 to graze some pivots of triticale. I hope it works for them, they asked me for advice and I gave them the green light.

Seems like a decent buy really. If it wasn't so hard to come by grass around our area I'd sure like to be the young guy who took a stab at something like that. But I have a suspicion that you can't buy the cows and grass and make it pencil real well.

That's for sure, add $300-$400 for pasture and it might be break even at best. He's talking about selling them in 60 days when the feed runs out. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. This is the same guy who bought 1000 cows last fall, fed them out and cleared about $300/head. He's not afraid of risk.

If you could run the cows cheap enough in a lot until the calves got to be 300# it is a cheap way to get into feeder calves. Sell a bred cow back out for $1500 have 90 days at 1.5 a day feeding pairs so you end up with $585 calf or $1.95 for 3 weights. Put another $10-20 cwt for vet and death. Seems cheap today when 7 weights bring over $2
