I had the opportunity to see the band "Cross Canadian Ragweed" in concert last night in Denver. They were flat AWESOME! And, it was affordable to go to, too.

I had never heard of them (when someone mentioned their name, I thought wow that sure sounds like something Round up or Tordon would take care of!) but some of the "team" of folks I've been working on a project with are big fans and wanted to go. I am so glad I did.

I've heard other bands sing their type of music, like Pat Green and the Great Divide. I'd also say they are kinda similar to the music of Canuck favorite Corb Lund.

These guys are kinda grungy lookin' but dang can they play and sing!

If you get the chance to check them out, take it.

Lazy Ace even likes them...we generally don't see eye to eye on music, but here we do!

I think we should start a campaign to get them to the Dakotas, maybe they could play the BHSS.

Cheers---

one of the kids I work with is a big fan of ragweed. I usually get to hear about 30 seconds of each song...then he pops the button to skip to the next one...

if they had the old cassette tapes I had, they wouldn't do that, cause that is how the tapes got eaten up! too much FF and RW !

They are part of the Red Dirt genre of music from Stillwater Oklahoma. I believe their name has nothing to do with Canada, but the Canadian River in Oklahoma. There's no real "sound" like there is in a lot of music genres, such as the "Bakersfield" sound of Buck Owens, or the Outlaws of Willie and Waylon, but is a pretty wide range of music that is a mix of bluegrass, folk, country, blues, rock, western swing, and honky tonk. It is to country music what indie is to rock and roll. About their only common thread is that they generally originate in the bars around OSU in Stillwater.

Here is a link to their website:

When you get there, a sound bite off their new album plays automatically. It'll give you a taste of their music. It has a bit of rock to it, so some may not like it. Lazy Ace was suprised I did.

About their name...it is a combination of the band members names...

Cross (don't know if this is his real name, or a shortened version made into a nickname, edit: Cross (his real name, is the guitarist, not the bassist as I previously said.))

Canadian (the band lead is Cody Canada, and his from the Canadian river area)

Ragweed (Randy Ragsdale is the drummer, his Dad was in Reba's and Merle Haggard's band and I believe was killed in the plane crash that killed Reba's band)

Give 'em a try, you might just like them...

CCR is from Pampa TX!!!!! They are really good. If you listen to Dierks Bently's new song he says "Ragweed on the radio" Jason Boland, Wade Bowen, Joe Burleson, Cooder Graw, etc I could go on and on but Red Dirt is the genre or what they call Tx Music. My favorite song by Ragweed has to be " If I were President" speaks volumes in a round about way. jmo

My kids and Grandkids made me go to see them while we were staying at the county fair. I was tired and grumpy but by the time they were done, this ole lady was having a good time. I really enjoyed it!

Cross Canadian Ragweed is an alternative country band of the Red Dirt scene, formed in Yukon, Oklahoma, in 1994. It is composed of frontman/guitarist Cody Canada, drummer Randy Ragsdale, rhythm guitarist Grady Cross, and bassist Jeremy Plato. The band's name is derived from the band members' surnames: Grady Cross, Cody Canada, and Randy Ragsdale. There is a common misconception that the name is a reference to the Canadian River, which runs through Oklahoma and Texas.

After forming, they moved to the college town of Stillwater, Oklahoma, where acts like Mike McClure's The Great Divide and singer-songwriter Jimmy LaFave had established enough of a local scene to earn Stillwater the nickname "North Austin" (or, depending on your perspective, "West Nashville").

Red Dirt is a genre of music based in and around Stillwater, Oklahoma (the college town where Oklahoma State University is located). Critics say that Red Dirt can best be likened to the indie genre of rock 'n' roll as there is no definitive sound that can be attributed to all the bands in the movement. Most Red Dirt artists would be classified by the music industry as Americana, folk, or alt-country, though the range of sounds in the Red Dirt spectrum go beyond these genres. It has been described as a mix of folk, rock, country, bluegrass, blues, western swing, and honky tonk, with even a few Mexican influences.

Although Stillwater is the "Nashville" of Red Dirt music, having given birth to the scene and still considered its home by most, many Red Dirt artists have relocated to Texas and elsewhere in recent years.

The name Red Dirt comes from the soil in central Oklahoma. It is an outstanding feature of the region and comes from the large amounts of iron oxide found in the soil, which give it the classic red tint.

I bet you think Texas will win the Red River Shootout this year.............

Not a big TU fan but will root for them against any school that is not in Tx. Cody Canada and Randy Ragsdale are from Pampa or some little town around Spearman up in the panhandle. They went to school in Ok which I guess is were they formed the band but used to play in Pampa at this bar there all the time in the mid to late 90's. Several have moved to Tx and they are calling themselves Tx country (music) artist aka Red Dirt roundup in Ft Worth. but of course I get all my info from the radio and I listen to 95.9 the ranch out of Ft Worth so I'm not sure.
