We're considering buying a half section that's currently (mostly) in CRP. Actually, 80 acres are in wheat and the rest in CRP. It's enrolled until 2007, but has supposedly been extended for two years beyond that.

Since we just ranch, I've never had more than a passing aquaintance with CRP. I really don't know the specific rules. (Anyone got a website, other than the basic one from FSA?)
I know the contract would transfer over to us, but that's about all I know. Is the payment annual? What about if we want to take some of it out of CRP...What are the repurcussions there?

Any info appreciated! :)

It's an annual contract that pays a flat rental rate per acre. There are specific provisions in each contract as to the care/maintenance of the ground, you'd just have to look at the contract to know what special conditions there are. In W NE I doubt that there would be anything too difficult, mostly just keeping it from getting overgrown by trees, which shouldn't be a problem out there
If you take any ground out I'm pretty sure there is a pretty steep penalty, but I'm not positive about that.

Best bet would involve the landowner giving FSA permission to discuss the contract with you & then you just call the FSA office and lay out what you'd like to do & what the steps/penalties would be.

If you take sonme out before the end of the contract, you will have to pay back all the money paid in on the current contract (per acre taken out) as well as a penelty so at this point it would be plenty expensive to take out.
If the contract has been extended (paper work signed) but the county committe has not reviewed it, you possibly could stop the reenrollment on a few acres if you talk to the farm service agency very quickly. (like today) They extended the signup period for something like a month so if you can get a hold put on it, you may have a few days before the final decision has to be made.
you will have to get the land owners to tell them that it is ok to talk to you.
good luck
