while hunting deer this morning, I went to opn place, sent my kid to another about 3 miles away.....I shot a crappy little buck, and was down getting him cut up, went back to the pickup and saw 5 missed calls from my kid... worried, I called him....he watched a doe walk across a corn field, then as she reached the grass draw, she raced away, with a large male cougar after the deer......

we know that they are here, just never see them.....he said his days of walking into the trees before dark to hunt are OVER.

Last Sunday afternoon I was scouting for deer with another guy watching a powerline.

About 300 yards away we both saw a large, brown, long tailed cat slowly & methodically walk across the 200 foot wide opening.

This cat was at least 2 feet tall. I would not have believed it had I been by myself. We both thought it was a deer before we got the binoculars on it.

We have them around here too. We use the 3 S rule, and try to keep them to a manageable number. They do scare the crap outa ya when you see them though.

Prolly about 12-15 years ago a bow hunter I know saw the KDWP releasing one up around the Norton area supposubly to control the deer pop. Of course they say they said they know of no cougars in the area and denied it. I know the guy real well and he would have no reason to make it up. He wasn't trying to get attention, just come up in conversation.

Since it is probably just a run away house pet, why don't you leave a bowl of milk out for it and see if you can get close enough to check if it is wearing a collar. :D

There is a real disconnect with the wildlife department in about every state. Ours will outright lie as well. Went to meeting one time with a game warden who was trying to say we didn't have any in the state. I told him, that I had seen 3 in the 5 years previous and that there was a video in my email of a lady that filmed one on her back porch. He then said, well they are just passing through or someone let a captive one go. I let it go so I didn't come off being a jerk, but everyone in the room knew the guy was lying, he knew he was lying but he kept to the script. :???:

A relative of mine worked at the regional airport in OKC in the 70's and 80's and unloaded a few for the wildlife department, who claims that they have never released any in Oklahoma.

The first one I saw I was in high school. I was walking out of a field from deer hunting (place had a big population of deer for the time around here). I didn't have a binoculars and couldn't figure out what it was for a minute. My cousin was looking back through his and said it has a long tail and it's not a deer and not a coyote. When it turned, I could see the tail. It jumped flat footed up on top of a pushed up brush pile about 8 foot high on the edge of trees. That left an impression and I will admit that it took me a little longer to get to the stand each morning.

I told my kid that we are done walking trees in the dark. we will sit in the pickup, wait for the deer to move out of the trees, and shoot them there...

if the game wardens give me a ticket, I will fight it in court that th KDWP has made it dangerous to hunt with bringing the cats in here.

Those ding dongs at KDWP I think are just bored. They tried to relocate some antelope into farm country south of us 15 miles a few years back. They didn't last to long as the local farmers eventually shot them all.

Fella's, we have lots of cougars out here and they sure dont keep me from doing anything i want. :D They are way more scared of man than we are of them. Do what ya want, but a cougar wouldnt keep me from going into the woods before the sun came up. I usually see about 5 per year. Only saw 2 during the deer hunt but cut the tracks of 7 different cats in my travels lately. Be prepared but dont stop doing what ya enjoy over a cat.

Here is actual footage of what happened to Jigs! Your Spanish is pretty good pal! :D Click on the big picture to see the video.

Jiggsy, I have seen two in the Bostwick area in the last 2 years. Broad daylight, one was even nonchalantly crossing the road. I don't think they are scared of people down in this country. I don't blame your son one damn bit. I know of one cow that somehow survived an attack, though she still has the claw marks on her sides.

If the SOB has a collar on it, the gobermin nitwits WILL track it down, no matter how well you dispose of the carcass. Maybe cut the collar off and throw it in the Republican?

I agree

I agree with H at least for now. I go where I want in the dark and my only though is

"I would have to be damn unlucky to be the first guy in over 100 years mauled by a lion in SD" 8) 8) 8)

Nobody has been mauled in this area.....yet. Problem is, these cats aren't scared of people, or vehicles.

I can wait until the sun comes up to do what I have to do, if it's down by the river.

Well, I think it also has a lot to do with how hungry they are. I think I'd rather take my changes in mule deer country than I would in white tail. You can jump a mule deer 10 feet from you and it mayl take 20 steps before turning around to verify that they actually saw you. A white tail will break a twig under its foot and haul tail for 1/2 a mile and think twice about stopping. :)

I know attacks aren't common but they do occur once in a while. One happened in Colorado while I was there.

Guy out by Cheyenne Ok killed one many years ago that was trailing him. He was fined- but I also think did something with the carcas. A guy on the river by us lost a couple high dollar race horses. If it can mess up a race horse, I'm pretty certain it can make me have a pretty bad day.

It doesn't keep me up at night, but when I know I'm hunting in one's back yard, I tend to adjust my pattern a little and sure wouldn't put any deer colagne on. I don't like the advantage they have with night vision. Once I get mine, its on.

A male mountain lion was shot by a deer hunter Nov. 10, the opening day of the November firearm deer season. The incident occurred about 10 miles northeast of Ainsworth in Brown County.
The hunter reported the shooting to a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission conservation officer. According to the hunter, the cat walked parallel to him at about 35 yards as he left his hunting blind, made eye contact with him, then circled in front of the hunter's path. A subsequent investigation concluded the hunter was justified in killing the 150-pound animal.
By law, a person may kill a mountain lion without a permit only if it "stalks, attacks, or shows unprovoked aggression toward such person or another person," or if it is in the act of preying on livestock. Unlawful killing of a mountain lion is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and up to three months in jail.

We have even seen cougars down here to. My dad seen one a few years ago while him and mom was checking the cows and a few weeks later I seen one crossing the dirt road. Makes me wonder all those years I coon hunted when I was a kid and heard noises and didn't know what they was now.

Just found out tonight while my wife was on facebook. A deer hunter posted a picture of a trail cam picture of a full grown mountain lion less than 2 miles from my house just two days ago. Always heard rumors around here but never any real proof. Nobody has even had pictures of tracks around here. For those of you that have these thing this might not be a big deal, but around here it is. This area is combo whitetail and mule deer country with more mule deer than whitetale. We don't have any rivers, but small creeks with cottonwoods. The creeks only have water in them when it rains over 3 inches real quick. It's hard to believe this thing hasn't been spotted earlier. There isn't a spot on this creek for 15 miles that you can't stand on one side of the trees and see the oppisite side through the trees. Not to much cover and a lot of small patches of alfalfa along it you would think someone would have gotton a picture on a phone or something a while back. Don't know much about them, but walking in to a tree stand before sunup with a bow might make one think twice.

as elusive as they are in a relatively populated area, makes you wonder what could be lurking in an unpopulated area with lot's of cover. BIGFOOT perhap's :???:
