Difference between Rabicano and Roan

OK it really dont matter and yes I am whinning abit LOL
I went out and scrapped Holly and noticed how white or roaning she is getting. I have been doing this in the dark just to spend time and destress from work. So this is the first time I have really noticed.

I read that rabicano has the white tail head but no white on the head or lower legs. Rabicano spreads while roans get darker. Roans get dark marks when they scar.
I am so confused ....as I told shoer I really didnt want her to be roan, sorry I really dont like the looks of them and it seems EVERYONE has one.
He says I LOVE roans as I said, she is MINE.
Will color change the way I feel about her NO WAY. She is not going anywhere as I said I am just whinning a bit.

I really want to understand the differences. She seems to have both looks ..can that be? is there that much differences between them?
 
Well, MsSage, I learned something today.
My favorite horses are the coon-tailed ones. I had never
heard of Rabicano. I did a search and found this:

Rabicano: Rabicano is a pattern that is often confused with true dark-headed roan. The rabicano gene, however, is entirely seperate from the roan gene, though it does create a pattern of white hairs that can be similar to roan. It is usually manifested as a sprinkling of white hairs radiating out from a horse's flank, sometimes spreading across the barrel and onto the shoulder. Rabicanos also have a white-topped tail, known as a coon tail or skunk tail. There is some thought that rabicano may be tied to or somehow related to sabino as the rabicano pattern is often found in conjunction with sabino. Rabicano can act an any coat color.

So I guess the horses I am so fond of are RabIcano!!!
I'm not a lover of roans, per sei, but they are sure popular and
seem to sell for more, because of their color. Blue roans are
especially striking, to me anyway, but red roans aren't as pretty.
And to tell the truth (I'm gonna get in trouble here) I've never seen
a real good red roan. (Ok, blast away--I'm sure there are some
good ones, it's just that I haven't seen any.) Now the coon tailed
horses I have seen are ALWAYS good ones. :P

A lot of coon-tailed horses trace back to Smart Little Lena.
 
I use to have a book of Spanish Terms for Horse Colors but I guess someone needed it more than I did...
It had 100's of Horse Colors...

In the 40's there were not that many Palomino's and they were called "California Bays"
 
Its my understanding that Doc Olena had a coon tail. I have a G-Daughter of his that has a partial coon tail and she produced a full coon tail with all the rabicano roaning on a chestnut filly. Very pretty actually! She showed the roaning at birth in her flanks and withers and of course the coon tail. She also has several grease spots, not sure if that's part of the rabicano gene or not tho.
 
You buy/own a horse for what it can do for you.....not for it's color.


If you buy it for any other reason, you don't need it.

If you like your horse, hush up, take care of her and enjoy her and quit wimp'n about it.
 
was not being a whimp about anything, just commenting about one of my mares and what she's produced. Its all about QUALITY not color any day of the year!

Thanks jigger I would like to see her. With my new phone I can get some better pics of how Holly is coloring out. She has not "roaned"out she just has salt among the cinnamon not all over. Who knows she is still only 3 and might change over the next couple years.

qyhorsewoman jingo was talking to me....she will get over it. post pictures it would be neat to see the three of them and see how they differer and are similar.

It's obvious Jingo is not a horseperson.
People buy horses all the time for their color.
That's why there are so many gray's, roans, cremello's,
palaminos, etc. than there used to be. I remember Lynn Weishaar telling
Stan Weaver the only thing that outsells color is quality.

Truth be known, a lot of horse owners don't even ride their horses.
That's why Pat Parelli is so popular. Well, not totally why but
partly why. He has developed games you can play with your horse without
riding them. Times have changed from the days when horses
were a tool. Now they are recreation for many people.
 
I agree FH after the past couple weeks coming home from work I spend over an hour just petting and hugging Holly. After the lockdown then the stress of the Sgt board and trying to train myself as Sgt its been very hard. After I go back inside I am calmer and most times have the one issue worked out that was bothering me.
With no one to ride with and only caliche roads, which destroy horses hooves. Where am I suppose to ride?
Still sending prayers to jingo she needs them and lots of them.
 
Maggie has lots of white hairs throughout her body but she is not a roan.
I would think she is rabicano.
