Well,

We are getting somewhat infamous in our litle town, LOL....

This Post was one i am not sure where to put.....It is off ranch, but really about business....However, I peek into the Bull Session part of this forum and just want to leave, LOL....

Anyway's, I am learning a lot as I go. I did figure it up though, and after Cut and wrap, I am getting about $1.75 per pound on the hanging wieght of cattle I sell this way. They are lighter and not as fat as what I market to Tyson, but bring me $350/head more...

I wrote some Beef council organizations trying to get some flyers last night. What I do is also a lot of front line marketing on behalf of the Beef Industry...Four times yesterday I had people tell me they do not eat Beef anymore because of the fat. I reply, "Did you know there are 29 cuts of Beef leaner than a Skinless Chicken Thigh?" I then send them off with some little Flyers I picked up at a Oregon Cattlemans or Washington Cattlemans convention......

I want more of those flyers. I think they are definetly a good result of chec-off dollars. I also relaize that, for the most part, they benefit my sales in this deal and am willling to pay for them....But, just getting rid of the stereotypes and getting good informaton helps us all!!!!!!

A Beef Cuts chart would also help me sell more....

Anyways, a lot of the cattlewomen organizations do get out a few times a year to promote directly. Having this information helps to speak intelligently and give us credibility.......

I am not saying everyone has to do go out in front of others. We all have talents and some people just can't clean up and talk to folks. However, I think a lot of people should think a bit about trying something ouside thier comfort zone......It really feels good at the end of the day....I have had so many people that have stopped eating Beef come back and become regular repeat customers....

Glad to hear of your success, PPRM. It seems to me the for those who are in the right location, direct marketing is the answer to both producer profits and consumer satisfaction.

Yes....I also think sometimes peopl don't realize they are in a location....

I am 3 hours drive from Portland, Oregon...I will go there someday. I know I can get more for my beef thre than here. I currently sell some into that area...

The town I am selling in is 16,000 people......I look at it this way....If I can get each of those people to consume an average of 2 pounds of my beef a year, that is 32,000 pounds. That is about 60 head a year.....I am more than halfway past that and just really started...

I know that I am lucky...I also have a friend in Baker County getting $2.50/lb Hanging Wieght on Hieferettes that he culls. He does I think 10-15 of these a year and could do more...Point is it is a smaller community, with less affluence and in the heart of Cow-Calf Country...He is getting more than I for his beef! That gets my attention...

I think it is many times a time issue...I spend a lot of time to do this. But it is paying off...

My post is not to contradict what you are saying MLA.....It is just sometimes I think people put themselves into a box they do not fit into...

Well I certainly did not take it as a contradiction!

I was once of the thinking that if I could just farm another 100 acres, I could make more money. And another, and then another . . .

After chasing that falsehood for too long, I started to thnk that perhaps the solution was to try to generate more profit out of a smaller unit. That meant more work in producing a consumer package, rather than a bulk commodity, and then marketing it.

Just like you are doing. And there is no reason why one can not do it with wheat or other ag. products. It just takes a lot more work and few of us are willing to change our ways.

Wow..Exactly! Can you imagine selling bread made from your own wheat? One's imagination is the Limiting Factor...A few years ago, a lady was asking about how to make her operation more profitable and that is the answer I gave her....

Go after the Starbucks crowd for example......Everything in there is high priced! But their customers do not at all hesitate to pay it....It is about the way they feel about the choice to buy from there...

Direct marketing is a bigger deal than most realize. It makes my choices more complex. i have a local restaurant that wants to work with me as they Love my Beef. Good Young kids that know a lot about Food.....As I enter this, I need to have enough cows, and that makes me have to analyse a lot of things.....

Three ways to make more money...More volume, Lower costs and selling for more.........All are a bit of work, but I like managing a managable number of cows. So, it is all about finding the right feed and then selling the cattle right.

I do get a kick out of guys that tell me they are "Marketing" thier calves because they found a program that gives them $3.00/cwt more......Ummmmm......That is $21.00/head on a 700 lb calf...I am getting about $350/ head more........
