Disposal of unwanted animals: a dilemma beyond horses?

I was struck by the contrast in topics on today's Agri-Talk radio program. The first part was an interview with the manager of the last Horse Slaughter Plant in the US to close it's doors. This viable enterprize was put out of business by an emotional argument from the animal rights crowd and their vast numbers of sympathizers.

The second part of the show had to do with the purchase of chicks, bunnies and kittens as Easter presents for small children. Of course the logical result being that these cute little babies eventually become unwanted chickens, rabbits and cats that wind up in rescue centers, euthanized or turned loose in the wild.

My guess is that these parents who want a cuddly pet for their children are the same type of do-gooders that have sympathy for and fund the outlaw of horse slaughter, who find themselves owning an unwanted animal that simply outgrew their initial emotional need.

It is ironic that they find themselves in the same predicament as horse owners without a way to dispose of unwanted animals.

Very pertinent points, JF. The further that the United States people become from "growing up on the land," the more stupid they will become. Growing up on the land, a person has some idea of what makes the world tick. Growing up in a city, a person just thinks that milk comes in a jug and eggs come in a box.

The once great United States is becoming the dumbed down no-longer-great "Untied" States. :x
