Lane was excited and wanted to see if they were the right size for the chuckwagon
This was right after he brought them home and before I started working with them

With Lane's help we did hitch Veronica to the buck Board one day.

She was OK on the grass but when we hit the gravel road the noise behind her spooked her and she reacted. I was glad Lane was walking behind on the lines and and I was walking ahead calming her by talking to her. as he was able to stop her fast and we were able to unhook before she or the buck board were hurt. That is when I built the little rubber tired walk behind chariot. She is now getting use to the noise and I can keep her under control. I look forward to the day one of these ponies can give me a controled comfortable ride. I took a radio out with me one day and played loud WESTERN music to the ponies while I was driving them. I was hoping the extra noice would desensitize them. Does anyone have any tips to what I might use on them as people are already asking if I'm going to use them in parades pulling my carriages. Which would be fun but I want them bullet proof before I would even attempt it.

Any tips other than the ones I got from the neighbor which was ALOT of ground work and to make sure they can handle plastic shopping bags rattling around them and flying by.

If they get very jumpy find an old teamster that knows how to use a running W and teach them WHOA.

They never forget.
I knew if I waited long enough you would come up with something to actually help. Was it the threat of the ear full of airhorn the next time you call BMR. :?

But funny you should suggest that as I ran into a neighbor that has been driving for years and he said that is what he does when a team tries to run away with him. To him whoa means whoa and nothing else. I guess if I run into a problem I know where I can get help Thanks.

Looks like fun. Thanks for the pictures.

It has been a blast but I think BMR is already figured out a way to make them pay for their hay. I thought I could pull the barn sled over to the hoppers and pull oat pails back to the barn when needed but He figures I should re-enforce the front of the barn sled so I can use it to clean the barn. :???: But I have to agree it would be a good way to teach them to stand still while I fill the sled. I just thank goodness it isn't a big sled I'll have to pitch full.

Nice ponies....

But I'd say if they can put up with your mouth...they're pretty much desensitized to ANY type of noise they're ever gonna hear!

Someone should hold your head under water for a minute or two. That way you would have time to reflect on being a nicer person.

pick me, pick me!! I'll do the holding if someone else flushes the toilet!!

Tam your girls look good, if the driving doesn't work, they'll be just the right size for grandkids to ride

Lets have a lottery for the dunking!!!

Dad drove teams for years and I will ask him.... But I think the rest except for kola is right... Whoa means whoa!!! I know dad always hooked young colts with older well broke horses, I know you don't have... He used to tell really good stories about a colt and older horse.. He would turn them loose together in the stack yard and let the older horse do a lesson or two on the colt....
I think time will be the best thing and be consistant...

They are cute! I must've missed the beginning....where did they get rescued from? Good luck and keep the pictures coming.

Rest easy I doubt I will have to use the W. I have had them bolt while walking behind them and it was never anything I couldn't stop before I was to the end of the lines. I had one friend that drives alot come down and he was very impressed on how well the ponies respond to my commands. I can even pole bend around my pine trees with just saying right , left and a very light pull on the lines. They have been great and I have thanked my son more than once for pulling them off his truck and keeping them for me. I'm very proud of them and him for saving them. :D

As for the dunking I think I should get to be the one holding and the rest of you can count to let me know when I have to let IT up for air.

Funny you should say that as the day Lane brought them home he said he figured the ranch was going to need a couple good ponies as we have two great nephews one about 16 months and the other about 6 months and it was only a matter of time before one of his sisters would make him an uncle. A week or so later our daughter came home and told us she is expecting, a surprise to all of us including Lane.
Funnier yet was our daughter told her husband when she first found out about the baby that it was going to have a pony and he said he didn't think so. Only to find out that her brother without knowing about the baby had rescued two ponies and brought them home. She told her husband "see I told you our child was going to have a pony" When they came home to tell us about the baby, she and her husband went to the barn to meet their childs pony. Funny how things just work out.

I have been on Betty bareback, while Lane was there to help if I got into trouble, she was OK with it. I have had saddle on both but I didn't sit up in it as I was by myself and was still a bit scared of what my tailbone might feel like if they tried to buck. I have since been on my old horse helpping with sorting cattle and everything was fine. So I might try sitting in the saddle the next time I put them on. Right now I just want to get them broke to drive so I can take the little ones for a ride on the buckboard or sleigh this winter. Lots of work but I think it will be well worth it and great fun for the kids and me.

j2 you been around here long enough to know we keep the rudeness out of the ranch page.
good luck

Miss Tam the only way I found to desensitize a horse,if there really is such a thing is steady work, you know the story no sense goin into detail, when I bought a couple green Colts a while back I had heard of a so called desensitizin "CD" that the police and the Texas penal system use on their horses, supposed to have gunfire and lots of crowd noise.
but I dont think anything is gonna take the place of lotsa hard work.
good luck

PS Horses and crowds = bad news.
