Saturday marked the beginning of Vermont's Youth Deer Hunt Weekend.

Ridge Bishop and his dad Michael got up at dawn to get an early jump on the weekend. "I built him a big shooting shack because I was worried about the weather and I wanted him to be comfortable for his first time out," Michael Bishop said.

And for his first time, this eight year-old from Swanton did pretty well for himself. "This is the first buck of my life," Ridge said.

"I did a double take. I looked again. I said you got a ten pointer, you got a ten pointer. And he was all excited, he started crying again and he was all happy and I was so proud of him -- he got a monster ten pointer, nice buck," Michael said.

Here in Saskatchewan kids have to be 12 before they can hunt. I think thats about right for most kids. They learn a lot traipsing behind mom or dad without need for a gun.
I pinch my buck tag pretty tight but plan to harvest a doe with my little troop of kids along.

Before Ty could buy a tag I used to let him sneak in a plunk the odd one in the butt with his pellet gun lol. Hows the rut kicking in your way-there's the odd buck chasing around up here-there's soooo many does.
