Electric Fence Chargers??

I am planning on buying an Electric fence charger. Where is the best place you have found to get them? Who has the best prices?

I am thinking of getting a Gallagher charger right now but haven't completely made up my mind yet.

Gallagher is the only way to go, you can find one for any sized application. Right now we're using the M1800 as well as the B200 for a remote location. You can even get one that has a remote control to turn the charger on or off from anywhere on the fenceline. Gallagher chargers also have modules you can replace. This often fixes the charger after a lightning strike. I was crawling under my fence the other day and my shoulder brushed the bottom wire. You should have heard the yelp I let out. We run Stayfix... They seem to work pretty darn good... I had one knock me on my arse once.. A shock will definitly be felt for a while.... Gallaghers are real nice too, we just real nice deals on the Stayfixs..

I'm not sure of the model I will need. I sent an e-mail to Gallagher to have a rep contact me. I am going to use the charger to run a hot wire around the top of my fence. I have about 35 acres and need one that won't be affected by weeds. I have cleaned out around my fence but I'm sure that weeds will get into it some.

I am trying to keep preditors out so I want something that will keep them out.

If you get a good charger you can charge thru moderate weeds - - - I have about 5 miles of fence on one charger and I run 2 wires at 12" and 24" above the ground.

I have it so that I can disconnect the bottom wire to allow me to work on it if needed but normally keep both hot. I no longer have stray dogs, or coyotes ( yes they are in central Indiana ) and the deer stayed out for about two years - - - they are now coming back so I'm going to try two more wires on top on the outside fences to try to keep them out - - - I know it is a losing battle but if I just keep a few out it is worth it. Besides the higher wires should discourage hunters as well.

My current charger is about 5 years old and is from TSC and states it will charge 150 miles of fence so when I test it in the winter with no weeds I get 8.5 kv and now with a moderate weed load I'm still getting 6.8kv which seems to be enough. When I installed it I had a 5 light tester and could only get three lights at the far fence - - put in a second ground ( instructions call for three) and got four lights - - -put in the third ground and got all five.

I guess what I'm trying to say is there are several good chargers on the market but instalation will make or break a good result. Low wires are needed for the problem dogs!

Gallagher,is a good one and parts are readily availible,but there are lots of good ones on the market,just gotta find one that fits your needs,I only use them at water gaps,they sure make it easy ,stretch one hot wire across the gap and wait for a storm to wash it out,then just stick it back up again,lot easier than fixin fence that you know is gonna get washed out again,One thing I do with chargers is always buy a bigger size than you need,I have a couple of them at the back creek crossings that are good for 25 miles,an ole cow sticks her nose on that ,she gets the message pretty quick,in addition I find your ground does'nt have to be as good,I have had good luck with just a "T" post,that probably wont work for long runs ,but that's how I do it ......large chargers,short runs,in moist ground,works good..................good luck

I'll put in a third vote for the SpeedRite. SpeedRite uses better discharge capacitors than the Gallagher line, and I found they also handle grass build up better. I have a fenceline that has alot of poplar growth along it, and the only fencer I ever had that could power through was the SpeedRite. The Gallagher of the same stored Joule rating couldn't touch it.

Just a thought, but if you want to keep predators out, you'll want to rethink making the TOP wire your hot one. Predators don't usually jump the top wire. Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm sure I wasn't clear in my first post. My fence has chicken wire all the way around it. Preditors will have to clime the fence to get it. They can't go under it. This is why I need a hot wire around the top to stop them from climbing over.
