We headed for the ranch to build some fence. Left Sunday night and came home tonight for an interveiw tomorrow.
Cross your fingers for me! Sunday afternoon we had a little shower blow through with lots of Lightning. Pretty picture but more to come thanks to the thunder bolts!
My Aunt's cows in the lower field look happy. This meadow gets flood irrigated most of the summer. We pulled our camp out and stayed under the old black willow grove.
The kids had a blast!
This summer has been stressful but in a neat way kind of amazing. Spending this time with my family is heaven! Just a swingin'!
West desert waterpark!
Swim kids, SWIM! We threw a canvas dam in the ditch and made a swimmin' hole. Our bunch is pretty easy to please!
While the kids splashed, i dug posts holes and built strain braces. It was in the upper 90's but enough of a breeze to make it bearable.
While riding the 4 wheeler back to camp for lunch i noticed smoke in Joe's canyon. Grabbed a sandwich and headed up. I got upwind of the fire and hiked up to it's elevation. From across the draw.
Upclose and personal! Flames were 15 feet in the air. Maybe 1/2 an acre and more than I could handle with a shovel.
The breeze really helped keep it knocked down. It would blow in all 4 directions and the fire never could take off.
Was warm enough to curdle your milk if ya had a glass!
I decided I couldnt do much alone, so i snapped some pictures and headed down to call the BLM fire crew. The fire was on Forest Service land but the BLM handles suppression and attack out here.
I got to my wheeler and made it half way down the canyon when I met the calvary! BLM had been alerted by another rancher and were heading up. I showed them how to cross our land to get to the fire. They ended up parking thier trucks at the top of our homestead field. Then they called in a helicopter for air attack.
They brought the chopper over to where we camped and got water out of the old pond that feeds the meadows. It was neat watching the pilot work. The kids thought it was AWESOME!
If you were a frog or a tadpole ya might of been less excited. That old boy in the heli was smooth. He had a 20 mph breeze and that copter just sat there til the bucket was full. He made a round trip in 4 1/2 minutes.
They brought the re-fuel trucks right to camp and filled him up once. The BLM guy and gal who were with them came and got the kids to take a closer look! The Pilot is from Idaho Falls. His name is Dick Reeder and he is a nice guy. The kids politely declined a ride in the bucket. I wanted to go but weigh limits put the kibosh on that!
The firefighting operation finished off the afternoon. So we had a dutchoven dinner and hit the hay! There's GOLD in them thar hills!
Looking south across the desert from our little oasis.
We got up the next mornin and worked on fence awhile. After breakfast, we ran up Joe's canyon to make sure all was cool!
Fire folks did a fine job of extiguishing the fames. Why fence when you can enjoy the cool canyon. Found some pretty wild pea vine.
The granite ledges are pretty cool. The road just meanders up through em'!
Joe's is a favorite canyon of our's. Lots of stuff to see.
Had to throw in a picture of some bucks!
There were 11 in a batchelor band. Just realized how many pictures I took! Stay tuned for part 2!
