Well, we have it again. The news just released that there have been 2 fatalities in the Black Forest fire. The fire broke around 2:00 Tuesday afternoon. The discoveries were Thursday afternoon. Someone had recieved a call about twenty to four that the deceased could see a glow on the horizon, and were going to leave. At five another call that they were leaving right now, and the called party could hear poping over the phone. The charred remains were found this afternoon beside their car with both doors open. Don't ever think that you can outrun a wild fire. Maybe you can, but you are betting your life on it. Winds have made this another very difficult fire. The loss of homes, and these are mostly high end homes, have surpassed the Waldo Canyon fire of a year ago. My daughter made the decision to move their cattle yesterday. The fire is still about 6 or 7 (just a guess) miles from their pasture, but they could corral, seperate and load cattle with smoke on the horizon instead of a glow on the horizon. This fire affects a lot more livestock than Waldo did. I am ready for the rainey season; if anyone knows where it is call me! I have a cousin near the Royal Gorge fire. She said that they were moving cattle to the high country, and the smoke sure put a damper on an otherwise enjoyable day. I do not think they have any pasture that is endangered.

I have a friend that has animals in the Gorge, and he thought he lost them. I am sure praying for all of you out that way!!!

I was praying everyone got out of the fires' path, but as fast as it was moving, it is not that surprising to hear there was a loss of life.

It's terribly dry here and today we had dry thunderstorms with lots of lightening, wind, and strong gusts. There have been several small forest fires in this area but nothing has grown very big.

Just sickening news. Thoughts and prayers for everyone involved. We have had 5 straight days of high 90's and 35 mph wind. This place is one lightning strike or one careless ciragrette butt from doing the same thing.

We live about 15 miles northwest of the fire. The worst of the fire seems to be in the timber. Our area is mostly open or with scrub oak. We are not too concerned, but they keep expanding the evacuation area.

I think I'll go to town and buy some asbestos underwear.

What a country of extremes we live in- up here we're hoping for the rains to hold off a few days so the creeks/rivers can go down and avoid anymore flooding-- and down there you folks would love to have the thundershowers we're having right now....

Cowpuncher, you are about neighbors with the kids. They summer on Lorraine Road, where they evacuated the cattle from. Copy the undie idea! Are you Spruce Mt.?

How far is it from the town of Elbert? I seen that it was kind of south west of there. I delivered a lot of horse hay in that country a few years ago so kind of know the area some. Have a good friend east of Larkspur and another about 8 miles south east of Elizabeth. Praying for rain, the whole dang state needs it. We had a shot tonight but didn't get much but the wind blew 70mph.

Shortgrass,

We live abput half a mile from the DirecTV broadast facility off Garton Road. We always thought we were pretty much fireproof due to mitigation work and our house is all masonary.

Not too sure now,

CP

Yesterday, a rain did go across the burn. It was so well placed right over the fire, and dropped the temps from the mid 80's to the mid 60's in a matter of moments. Thanks be to God! The fire is not out, or considered contained, but it is currentaly controllable. Many evacuees are home again. The latest list as of 12:01 a.m. Saturday, June 15 states 473 homes as a total loss; 17 are partially damaged; 3,181 are unaffected. Two deaths. We are headed up to help the kids move their cattle back to summer grass today. The Royal Gorge fire is in a similiar status. Another lightning caused fire in the Arkansas River bottoms west of Lamar is now fully contained.

One thing about these fires and fighting them. They usedd to use a lot of county equipment in places. Now with computerized maintainers if one shuts down it can take up to five minutes to get them running I was told. So they will be a lot more cautious sending them into fight fire
