So I bring up to my calving yard all my AI program hfrs and cows 2 days ago, first due date is on Jan 16 and sure enough a cow due on Jan 20 has to calve sometime around 4am last night with nice dead bull, We had 4" more wet snow overnight. Calf not froze at all no sign it was ever up so something went wrong. Pretty sad as she calved 20" from my calving barn. Not a good start to the calving season. Temp only -1 so cold not an issue. I guess we cant kill all of them so I hope for better luck on the next 65

This cow calved 18 days early last year as a hfr, put it up to first calf I guess, I like early gestation, but 20 days is a bit too early! I hate having to check all night starting 2 weeks ahead of calving, I guess that's what you get for this calving window.

My Dad use to say when it doesn't bother you when you lose a calf, that's when you should worry. I know I beat myself up every calving season when one dies. The what ifs and should haves always bother me. But death loss is part of the business. Best of luck.

Back when I was newly married, young, idealistic, and we were starting to ranch on our own hook, I got up in the middle of every night to check the heavy cows for three weeks before we got our first calf. By the time calving actually rolled around, I was about tuckered out.

We delivered a pup yesterday. Went by the neighbors cows, and there was a tiny new born trying to get his feet under him. I tried to help, but mom said NO.(I didn't argue) Went back to their house, and roused them out of their nap. Guess the calf survived, but he's small.
They sold off most of their cows this fall. Day after Christmas, I had to go put one of their old cows down. I think they were down to 54 head. I shot 1, and 1 premy. Down to 52 to calve. I think they are on a 180 day calving frame.
