I used to build High Tensile fences for others before I went to college. After talking to someone at a pasture walk on Saturday afternoon about their fence problems, they want to pay me to come find what's wrong with it. I'm going to test their charger and ground system, plus look for any shorts. It's been over 10 years since I built or serviced someones fence, I'm not sure what to charge now, especially just for servicing it. Please give me an idea on rates related to HT fence contracting and service.
The other idea going through my head is that I've played with the idea of getting back into designing and building fences. My grass fed beef business is growing slowly and I plan to get to the point in the near future where I can get rid of my other job and focus on my direct market sales. I'm thinking that in the transition between eliminating the "town job" and going full force with the beef I could be designing and building some fences again. It's very dificult to find a contractor in our area. Pleasure horses are a big opportunity, plus the new farm bill has additional EQIP funding. In addition there is a place called Paris Farmers Union that has a bunch of stores and has a route that they deliver supplies to farms, they also are a Gallagher dealer but have been looking for a contractor to refer customers to. I'm no longer biased towards Gallagher, I use a hybrid of products.
The other opportunity I see to fill in the gaps of becoming fully self employed is wood, as fuel oil gets out of control more people are looking to firewood here, you just can't find it. We probably have 150 or more acres of a woodlot. Just a thought.
