Bond revoked for Fort Pierre man

Bond has been revoked for a Fort Pierre man, who now faces charges in four different cases including one involving a rodeo barrel racing horse being taken from the Stanley County Fairgrounds.

Flint David Dahl, 22, appeared in Stanley County Court Monday afternoon. He was arrested Friday for ingesting marijuana, commercial vehicle DUI and no commercial driver's license. All three charges are misdemeanors.

Court documents indicate that Dahl had been cited last Wednesday for speeding by a state Highway Patrol trooper who reported that he smelled marijuana in Dahl's vehicle. On Friday, a Stanley County sheriff's deputy made a traffic stop on Dahl. The defendant tested positive for both marijuana and alcohol use. He was taken to the Hughes County Jail.

Dahl told Magistrate Judge Mark Smith Monday that he had consumed alcohol, but had not smoked marijuana. Dahl says he had the alcohol after reading unflattering things about him on the Internet.

Dahl now faces four different cases including the alleged theft of Dually, a rodeo barrel racing horse taken July 5 from the Stanley County Fairgrounds. The horse was later found, having sustained several injuries. Dahl is charged with grand theft and inhumane treatment of an animal.

Dahl, also faces, among other charges, threatening a law enforcement officer in a second case and hit and run property damage in the third case.

Dahl had been placed on a $5,000 bond for the horse-related charges, which had been paid for by his father. Smith revoked that bond and ordered no bond, meaning that Dahl will remain in jail until his scheduled court appearance next Monday on the first three cases. Smith says it was best that Dahl stay in jail so he doesn't get into any further trouble before next week.

Dahl's attorney, Bernie Duffy, told Smith that Dahl's problem is alcohol and that he needs treatment. Duffy said he will be working to get Dahl evaluated for alcohol as well as sent for in-patient treatment care.

Give me a break - I am glad his bond is revoked but for him to blame his "drinking problem" on the internet - PLEASSSSEEEEEE !!!!!! He was DRUNK the night he stole Dually, what was he upset about that night??????

Don't think my Dad would bail me out. He would hold the door of the jail cell open while the authorities threw me in and then shut it tight. :?

It's good to see our court systems working the way they should. $5,000 bond is nothing compared to the crap he pulled, I am glad they revoked it, even though it will cost tax payers much more to house him, it's worth the money.

Let me just say I know of this as it is from my home "area"...and Flint is sorta well out of control, but he was not the only one involved with this incident!!! There were others that were slapped and some that weren't slapped. Bernie Duffy is a well respected individual and a very good lawyer.....not sticking up for Flint (or Bernie)..Flint is troubled and deserves what he gets. Just saying would not want to be the lawyer to try and defend such a renegade. Lawyer's get such a bad rap on cases in which they are simply doing what they are being PAID to do.....blood money in a way. Flint is a definite problem and should be locked up...no question. He wrecked his daddies pick up like not long after and wraped it around a tree or a light pole or something and fled the scene. Just a kid that took the wrong path....Fort Pierre is not a horrible town full of drugs...just a small South Dakota town full of dead end kids who feel they have no escape from its grasp...I know...cuz I've been there. To be honest as cold as it may sound...why is this making the headlines....did South Dakota hear about the kid who was molested by his Uncle in Austin...or did South Dakota hear about the two individual who were gunned down in Houston because they were gay....no...but one horse is stolen and mis treated the entire nation hears about it.....I dunno....There are way more important things to spend our time defending and worrying about that involve kids and individuals of society. Not that animal welfare isn't important, but this case has been blown up and exagerated in so many ways!! The facts have been so fabricated.....there are more important things to devour our time people..and if you don't think so then you need to re-evaluate your purpose!

One reason this hits home for us.....is rather obvious. We are involved in rodeo. It could happen to any of us at any time. I hope it doesn't.

The other main reason is because there are several here on this board that are from the area this happened in. All of us are concerned....because if he gets a slap on the wrist for this crime...then who's to say his next victom won't be a human being....a child....a girlfriend.....etc.

News of this spread real fast in the Barrel racing scene. The members of this sport have banded together to offer prayer and support for Wendy Halweg in hopes that her horse recovers and that the person/s responsible pay for their crimes.

And I in no way am saying that there aren't way worse things goin on to be concerned about. This is just somethin that we have a common interest in......and want to see justice done.

I think what Tx is asking why isnt anyone getting upset over the guy who beats a kid for years and get off with a slap on the wrist? Yes it is a shame but as he said
there are more important things to devour our time people

Sounds like this kid will end up in prison and if he doesnt get any treatment will come out and pick up where he left off and I am sure the next victium will be a person.

You want justice done, get involved in politics and the election of Sheriff and the appointment of the Judges. Get more treatment programs and activities to keep kids off drugs.
That is a REAL fix to the Biggest problem.

Yes I understand why it hits home as my family rodeo's and ranches as well and the bold mistreatment of animals in this manner affects anyone of those backgrounds.....and I know Fort Pierre like the back of my hand as I've been on nearly every street in that little town. I've been following this story as many have and it is agreed that Flint should be horse whipped and thrown in the clink....as he will be minus the horse whipping. I know a few more that were right along with him that should and more than likely will wind up in the clink at some point along the way to. This DWI deal with the pot was strike 3 now....that kid just can't do right don't seem like. I know them and growing up the way Flint did tho its really no wonder...he didn't have the best rearing.....anyway....I'll admit I was hitting the bottle last night as I typed that earlier so it may have sounded a little more crass than I intended.

if the crap gets dealt with when it is petty the more serious stuff might have been averted.. and a horse and its owner spared alot of agony..

seems the bigger the town the more small stuff that gets ignored and then everyone wonders why didn't someone do something before the kid was molested, gunned down or worse..

I pulled a lot of crap when I was young..in a dead end little town with no jobs and a bleak future and a worthless president making it worse.. but it wasn't tolerated and a big deal was made over some petty crap I and a few others pulled, and I was shipped out and I straightened up..

now as an adult I understand the importance of personal responsibility.. and I push to address problems when they are small so our town doesn't have to deal with the shocking crimes that follow...

I know some, but not all, iinvolved here.

If history repeats itself.......this boy will just get a slap/ warning and life will roll on for him.

See,genetics do prove out at times.

The experiance I have had with showing my horse this year is that we all take care of each other... I had a girl take my water bucket out of my stall because Limit was playing with it and had gotten it loose.. She was afraid he would get his foot caught... I thanked her... Also after the first day of showing I was beat so I told my stallmates.. People I had just met at the show that I was going to go lay down for a nap... I was up at four in the morning to get to the wash racks... ( there was three holsteins there even at four in the morning.) So when I cam back from my nap I walked to the stalls and the girls put their fingers to their mouth to shush me... They whispered that limit was taking a nap too!!! Sure enough he was all stretched out in his stall sawing logs... I helped a gal saddle her english mount... Most are very nice... The only ones I've had trouble with or were rude was trainers... Phew.... some real jerks!!
