I spent an hour on the phone with Mr. Maurice Boney tonight, the founder of the Irish Blacks. And as you said a year ago, he is still a pisscutter. I think we could have talked all night. Quite a man.

And for the rest of you, it was -50 here this morning with the windchill, and I'm not afraid to admit that me and my Galloway cows were mildly uncomfortable, shaggy hair and all. After a winter like this I wish I could afford a vacation for me, the wife, and the cows, closer to the equator.

Maurice Boney is still around..... have not heard of him in years. I remember when he brought in then Beef Friesion (sp) (Irish Holsteins)
to the stock show in Denver.
I thought Galloways were a thing of the past until I sold some semen last month. Apparently they can be registered through the Canadian Livestock Records. Some may not know but at one time Galloways were bred to slick off in the summer.

I live in California and i need to go somewhere warmer on vacation.Funny thing is if i were to go into Reno,i'd be in a short sleeve shirt.Amazing the difference a few miles makes.

Those Irish Blacks in the article, the Hendricksons from Saint Ignatius Montana, were started from Maurice Boney's herd in Colorado. Just an amazing amount of dedication in the development of that breed. He doesn't push his cows as hard as some, they do get fed well, but it's still impressive how they planned it all out.

Galloways of certain bloodlines still do that HayFeeder. We have bulls that are shaggy as a sheepdog right now. In 3 months they'll look like an Angus. Maurice Boney told me some stories about his experiences feeding Galloway calves back in the 60's. He had nothing but good to say about them. It sure was interesting.

Northern, you let me know when you want to go. I'd say it's about time you and I had a road trip together.

Tender subject, ran out of buyers.....early on. Passed 16 Welsh bulls, and one Galloway. We've sold some since, just one of those years I guess.

As for Sunday, we're weaning calves this weekend, and sorting some more cows to sell. Sending some bred heifers to Ontario, and we're going to sell another 30 or so bred cows.

:???: don't they teach any of you Americans geography in school?.....LOL
The Friesian breed of dual purpose/dairy cattle was developed in the Friesland province of what is now the Netherlands. Holsteins were developed close by in the province of North Holland (not the Holstein region in Germany as some people think)
Thus I see no grounds to call the "beef friesians" Irish Holsteins.

I am sure those cattle did not feed well in the 60s as Galloway never put on fat like other cattle did then.

Did Maurice have something to do with Amerfax or was that just Tim Odles (sp) OCC deal. ?
Just to many breed names for me to catch up on Beef Fresion, Amerifax and now Irish Blacks.
