I have been looking for a type of grass or other type of plant that would withstand the heat and wind and improve grazing conditions later through the summer. Here my grass is usually shot by mid July and the cows really hit the native grass hard. Anyway I ran across an article on forage kochia and have tryed researching it some. All the information I have gathered says it is great fall and winter grazing plus it competes well with cheatgrass and improves overall range conditions and is also non-invasive.
My questions that I can't seem to find an answer for are, Is there a reason it can't be grazed earlier? The literature that I've read says there aren't any nitrate problems. Will it eventually take over an entire pasture or co-exist with the existing grass? How long does it have to be established before it can be grazed?
Do any of you have any hands on experience with forage kochia or know of someone who has planted it and what kind of results they have had.
Thanks,
