They are on BLM land, which borders us to the North, we start at the road and go south. It annoys me to no end, the deer will dig and paw the snow to find grass, not the elk, they lay and wait for you to come and feed, they're like cows following a chop pail!

Haven't you ever seen the pictures of the elk feeding grounds outside of Jackson Hole?
Yes they will follow a truck just like a cow.
Too bad your not here in Montana, my son is getting an elk tag after he takes hunters safety. He would just love to get a nice cow elk.
Too many of the best spots have been bought by the ding bats that say that they are "their elk". no hunting.

oh trust me we have those people here too, every week there are letters to the editor about how we need to save the elk because they are starving!

Jim Gerish mentioned elk migrations wrecking fences when he moved to Idaho. Do I have the right animal? Anway, instead of trying to build a stronger fence that would still break, he lowered it a little so they could go over it, high tensile and powerflex posts, still goin' strong.
I've asked this before, in our State we can shoot animals that are getting into our field or destroying fences, this includes deer, moose and bear. I can also shoot a bear for thinking he may be a danger to my calves. I don't need a permit, I just need to leave it and report it within 12 hours. I think you can keep a couple, then the rest have to be donated to charity. Hunting laws don't apply so you can hunt them at night if you like. If I wanted someone else to do it for me while I was away, I'd need a permit from the warden. How many other states have laws like this favoring farms?
Reminds me of when I was a kid, they tried to introduce Caribou into Maine. I guess they eat lichen or something, they all migrated to Canada and/or died. No Caribou for Maine.

Can you harvest a few ( not the in laws ) if they come onto your property at feeding time and eat your resources?
I have had all hunters who come here take the legal limit of does ( 3 ) or they can not come back next year. Some of the neighbors cried I was going to wipe the deer out but I started this in 1974 and this is the first year I have been able to see a drop in the number of animals. Last fall was the largest harvest we ever had as the hunters combined ( 6 groups ) took a totoal of 75 animals. The previous high was 48. So far this season only 5 and I see little or no sign of crop damage for the first time ever.
I feel the drop in numbers had more to do with the drought we had two years ago than the hunters ( maybe a combination of both )

In Oregon we can't shoot deer or elk that damaging your resources. Don't know about bear or cougar without a tag.

We can apply for a damage hunt, but it must be done the year before. :???: Tells you how smart our FWP is.
They give out "cracker shells", work like fire crackers, but the animals get used to them and don't run from them. Buckshot works good, but have had that fail before too.
Husband and I have been informed since we restrict the hunting on our place we cannot get a damage hunt or any assistance.
We just tell the hunters does only. Had 5 nice bucks taken this year. These hunters have been coming to our place for around 5 years and more. They have taken out about 20-30 does each year. The buck population was up so each hunter could take 1 buck.

FWP is catching some heat over this brainstorm...I heard today- they are starting to sell tags over the counter without the June application...
We have several hundred whitetails that have moved out of the timber and hitting the stacks they can get into...The fence on one of my stackyards is getting old and sagging and they have been getting in there...Yesterday when we finally plowed out that stack- we found a doe tangled in the wire- with a broke leg...Appeared she had been there for several days...Anyway I put her out of her misery- and just left her laying outside the fence, like the law says you're supposed to...Anyway my dogs found the carcass and feasted- and now my wife is threatening to throw me and the dogs out of the house...
She doesn't appreciate the venison dog flatulence that comes with the free food.. :roll:
No they are not getting into the stacks, they are a couple of miles away where we winter the herd bulls. The F&G will give you fencing materials to put up and rubber bullets if they become a problem, but you are not allowed to shoot to kill.

NOt having to fight them off of my feed they are majestic animals. We don't have many around here so to see them is a novelty and they are beautiful creatures in my opinion. However, I do know how discouraging it can be to fight wild animals. Kinda like the damage antalope do to fences here or when deer stand on bales and poop and pee.

Aahhh....the joy of having all our land in a block with no crossroads........no witnesses. Other than the crows, magpies and coyotes.

The Moose and Goose folks must have really been catching hell--as I just heard on the news this morning that now they have opened up the damage hunt in the Milk River Valley to any legal resident or nonresident hunter-- they can use any leftover tags they had- or purchase up to 5 more tags across the counter for whitetails....
Still won't take care of the problem- as they should have recognized the problem existed earlier when all the hunters were here and would have got a much better kill...Most the local sportsmen are enjoying sitting in a warm ice house drinking hot toddies and fishing and aren't going to go out gutting deer in the cold....
And with it being so short notice and late- many of the out of staters that normally come won't come back....
I know for a couple years when they just left the season open late- and gave out up to 8 tags per person- I had one group of 5 Minnesota hunters that stayed an extra week and took 40-50 deer home on their trailer....
