WHY THE ELECTION MATTERS
Very few topics generate as much individual emotional reaction as political commentary. Most people are guided by core principals and they see those principals reflected in their leaders. A negative comment on their leader is immediately acknowledged as a direct assault on them as individuals.
Never has it been more important than this election to choose and express your choice in the form of a vote. Our election is important to us as Americans but also we servas proxies for citizens of other countries in the election of the leader of the free world. This year the contrasting views of the candidates is clear with each representing approximately half the voting public. The election is seen by many as a referendum on the economy and it is, but more importantly it is a choice of two views of the role of government in our daily lives and the future direction of our country.
Beef producers interact with the government and regulation on a daily basis. Under President Obama, those regulations have increased and those choices made by individual businesses have been restricted. The administration has threatened more intense and severe regulation of our water, our air and our workplace. The administration proposed the elimination of work on the farm by anyone under 16 insisting a youngster could be kicked by a cow. Obama has attacked many businesses just because of their size. He supports estate taxes because they redistribute land and other assets to the people. He supports eliminating any disaster relief to individuals solely because of their size. Drought relief in his world should only be available to the small family farm. His message is big is bad.
Our country was built on the premise that hard work can pay off. Success can be the dream of every participant in the world of commerce and individual visions can provide the engine of growth for our economy. This basic belief must not only be shared by the leadership of the country but our leader must articulate this vision in a manner that convinces the citizens of the importance of individual effort. This requires a understanding of how business works. President Obama lacks that understanding.
Mitt Romney has clearly demonstrated a working knowledge of the economy and how it works. He will support commerce and while he has spent little time addressing issues in agriculture, he supports principals that will serve as a foundation for growth in our ag markets. He will stand up for American businesses in global trade wars because he understands how trade works. He will celebrate success and not quash it.
The country is at a crossroads and the choices are stark between a socialistic approach similar to the European model or a more limited government role rooted in our traditions that have made this country great.
