FSIS Paves Way for Interstate Meat Shipments

Foreign counties under trade policies can ship and sell meat and poultry anywhere in the United States. But if those same products are offered from domestic sources, for example South Dakota, with anything less than federal inspection they can only be sold within that state.

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service has announced a final rule that will change that (read the rule here). Select establishments that have taken part in an interstate shipment program will have the option to ship meat and poultry products with the official USDA mark of inspection across state lines. The product they are selling will be inspected by state personnel.

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson says the new rule should increase market access for smaller plants and help increase competition. For family farmers and ranchers who utilize smaller plants, Johnson says the new rule will increase the market for their products and ensure they receive a fair price.

While this is a welcome move, I would like to see all of the campaign donations from the meat packing industry to Congress to be refunded to family farmers and state meat packers who had to suffer under the rule that allowed foreign meat to be sold in the U.S. and not their state inspected meat across state lines.

There just has to be some accountability for why things are so wrong in Washington for so long. It all stems from a paid off Congress that has run this country in the ground.

I guess I am asking for reparations, not just fixing a problem that should have never existed and wouldn't have if we had a political system that wasn't so bought off.

I didn't read the whole 246 pages, but would like to know if I could sell meat "LOCALLY" from a State Inspected establishment after this rule goes into effect.

I cannot at present, and there is no FSIS inspected establishment/abbatoir anywhere close to me.

I personally don't care about "Out Of State" sales. It doesn't pertain to me.

The same in our state, Mike. We don't have state inspections anymore. It is a crying shame for this to happen to states like ours where we actually produce cattle and people in our area may want to purchase it. They have to purchase it live then have it butchered with "no sale" on it.

The big meat packers used the USDA to run out the little guys who would slaughter for you with their incessant "you have to do it this way and you have to have your facilities remodeled this way. After they got rid of the little guys they went away from that type of control to HACCP.

Tyson didn't just pay off the Sec. of Agriculture--they got the govt. to help them concentrate the markets and to make systems to not hold them accountable. They didn't want to be done the way they did Hudson Foods.
