The 2nd day we got loaded and away with the sunrise. This time we had more company. Wayne's wife and kids came to help grandpa Phil haul cattle. Brin needed a ride on her daddies horse. She's a cute little cowgirl. Gotta share a story about her. We got them loaded and they headed for Delta while we went "looking for more cows". They stopped down by desert mountain for a restroom break and saw a bunch of the neighbors cows on winter range. Brin looked around for her dad and hollered "WAYNE! THE COWS ARE DOWN HERE!!!

Brin's new little brother and his grandpa Phil. He's a keeper! (The baby. The juries still out on Phil) My dad came along to ride with Phil on the trips to town as well, but the photographer failed to photograph him.

Wayne, Chance and I made another loop through the cedars. Chance and I swept a draw and found 13 which he dropped into the bottom. I gained some altitude and found a few more in the nosebleed section which I persuaded to join the rest.

I swear some of those old cows would roll their eyes when I rode up to them. As if to say, "Not you again! Where we off to now?"

While I was up on the ridgeline, I spotted some in a draw below my a ways. After getting mine off the ridge and joined up with Chance, I went over to see if I could get them. If this was a game of hide n seek, I WIN!

From there to here. But you cant get straight there from here. Ya gotta detour a ways unless you're mounted on a mountain goat. And ya'll know how I feel about goats!

Down the draw through the sage. We call this draw the "little Bruce" draw after some mining claims we have there. The cows were in pretty good shape for the year we've had.

We were aiming for 1 pm to be back to the corrals but we didn't get there til just after 2. But we had 47 head plus a pair of our neighbors he was out. It was a good gather. Heading for the home corral.

Wayne's young dog "Deets". He is gonna be as good as "Rowdy" if he keeps going.

Moving along on across the flat.

Wayne closing the gate while Rowdy (dog) and Jack (horse) supervise.

We made 2 rounds and got them all plus the horses home by 7.
26 head more to find next weekend and they will all be home at the buffet. Hope you all enjoyed hanging out with us via the internet. Have a fine evening.

Looks like quite an adventure, Leanin' H. Sure some good country to give a horse and rider a work-out in finding bovines. If the pole corrals become unusable, a set of portable panels would solve your load out problems. Ranching has become much easier around here the past fifty years since portable corral panels were invented.

Nice gather. Is that Wayne that comes from the Henry Mountain country? Those old cedar post corrals are hard to beat. Never seen a cow try to jump out of one.

He knows a little something about rough country. Cool pictures. And the cattle look to be in good flesh.

Phil bought an OK corral a couple years ago for just that reason Soap and it works well. It was over in an another area easier to get trucks into incase of more snow. These old corrals have shipped lots of cattle over the better part of a century. Sadly, those days look to be down the trail. It wouldnt take much to fix em' up fine but that isnt an option. Life will go on even if i am a nostalgic softy.

Wonderful pictures. I think I'd be worried sick about cattle spread out over that much rugged territory. It's what a person is used to. Ever notice how the side of the family that would keep tradition going is usually the side that doesn't get the opportunity?

You must be some tough suckers out there H because that looks like some tough country. Glad to see you are able to pass on the tradition to your kids even though it's not to the extent you would like. Your good attitude will carry you a long way.

Well you're half right! :D We are suckers though. Gcreek once told me there is a fine line between tough and stupid. Some years we lean more one way than the other.   This country is tough and steep and grows plenty of rocks. But it has gotten quite deep roots into my soul and I doubt I could ever leave it for good. I am sure ya'll feel the same way about the spots you are planted. :D

It's interesting seeing the look on pasture people's faces when I tell them it takes a month to find most of our cattle in the fall. The stragglers can take much longer at times.

Big Swede, H is a true example of the thin line between toughness and stupidity. His country looks a lot more enjoyable to travel in than the swamps and mosquitos so I'll leave my own example to others imagination..........

At least you looked more comfortable than these guys, H:

(same video that is at the top of the ranchers.net page)

Plus the fact that I wasn't real sure what they were doing. Gathing cattle for the cake truck????? That's as close as I could come, other than it was a PR shoot...

It was a nice video, but the music sounded like a funeral dirge. There looked to be a lot of wasted effort, to need that many cowboys to accomplish the task. All I have to do is drive out in the pasture and honk the horn, and the cows come running. It is usually daylight though, so the cows aren't stumbling around in the dark.

Most all ranchers know to honk the horn on the cake outfit and then get out of the way... :D

Maybe it was to show the public how much ranchers go through to feed and care for their livestock. We can't have too much of that. Now I'll have to go back and listen to the music. :D :D

I enjoyed the photos! Thanks for posting! Gosh I love those corrals and buildings like that!
