Does anyone know of any Gelbvieh breeders that work along the lines of what Tim Ohlde does with his cattle. I am looking to get more fleshing ability, moderation, and thickness. Any suggestions on AI sires for this?

I am not familiar with Tom Ohlde, however what you describe has been our focus for our Gelbvieh herd. Do not know where you are located, but we are just south of Edmonton AB and always open to a herd tour. We have downsized considerably over the last few years and are really trying to concentrate on the best.........although best is definitely in the eyes of the beholder ;-)
Should you have any questions, please e-mail me;

A forage developed home raised 3 yr old Gelbvieh the type we are selecting for since 1976, they are all commercial.

That's an impressive bull and a breed that someone suggested I use to beef-up the genes in my herd.

Thats what I am looking for Dylan!!! I have been using AI for several years in our herd of purebreds and everytime breeding season rolls around find it hard to really get excited about any of the bulls available. What bulls are you using AI if you are AIing ? I am not particular on color only quality. Any suggestions on sire lines?

Like the looks of your fella!
Originally from Hanna and have been back many times this last year taking care of my dad who still resides there...how far out of town are you?
Larry

The name was familiar, we are northeast 55 klicks, just east of Spondin 6 miles. You have been in Gelbvieh for quite a while is that right?

If you pay us a visit we can look at quite a few gelbvieh influence cattle. :D

We have not AI'ed for 11 years, but when we did we used a bull called Docs Roy Rogers, who goes back to a bull called EGF Mr. Doc 709R, we used the GKT Boo Boo bull and years ago we used Polled Hockeye, those are all old bulls so I don't know how much help that will be. We were never overly happy with or results from AI so I just started keeping my own Gelbvieh influence cattle that appealed to me and that is what we continue with today.
That Boo Boo bull probably left us with the best daughters, the few we still have are K's or 10 yrs old and are really good producing, good uddered , good footed deep bodied fertile cows. Not the widest cows but hard to beat.

Would love to see your herd, probably won;t be this fall though...if harvest ever does come ;-(
We have been in the Gelbvieh business for about 10 years, hadn't had alot of cattle experience before that, so it took awhile to get going. Took our own road on breeding, wasn't real keen on what a lot of the popular sires produced, had much better luck with breeding our own and it seems to be paying off....well at least as well as it can in this business!
Keep meaning to post a few pics, but a little slow with the process, but will get to it someday.
The other side of the family from Hanna are the Nill's....still a few of then around, but not many.
Hopefully we'll meet up in the near future and if ever up to the Leduc area, please stop by.

Dylan, have you ever used any SLC genetics? I didn't mind the 80H bull, he was younger, last I saw of him. Not sure how he matured, but with 54Y and Premier in his pedigree, he had the genetics behind him to be a good one.

I replied on Ct as well; but you live near the Oswalds (OZZ), I would call them up and set up a visit. Not saying you have to use their genetics or buy from them but they have been GV breeders forever and are close ,so it would be a good place to start check out the herd and pick John's brain(so to speak).
We have a lot of really nice commercial and purebred GV herds in Western Canada too with some great breeders, but it is a little out of your way .

Dylan I still like to use Boo Boo too, used him a lot on my commercial heifers when I still had a commercial herd. He gave me really nice terminal calves , very beefy.

I have a beautiful blk SLC cow in my herd. I have retained 3 of her daughters so far (4 ,but one broke her leg last year) she gave me my favorite heifer calf thus far out of Ozz Ideal Direction and I bred her back to the same bull again in Jan.

NR,
I bred all my heifers in the spring to Sir Arnold. That is kind of what I'm looking for, more of the older proven less diluted genetics more so than the newer show cattle. ANy other reccomendations
