Last fall I lost a couple of big calves when they got into a piece of alfalfa the day after a heavy frost.

We got our first light frost last night but last evening I had moved the cows off of the grass/alfalfa mix that they were pasturing on just to be on the safe side.

The links below have a lot of useful information about alfalfa.

Thanks Burnt, those are some pretty good articles.

•Alfasure liquid bloat product is 100% effective in preventing bloat and can be used during risk periods. If water source is controlled it works well. Alfasure or Dioctol can also be used to relieve bloat in animals.

Do you have any experience with these products -or- have you ever heard of putting a bottle of dishwashing soap in a trough to combat bloat. I read somewhere to put some prick holes in it and let it leak into the water, the soap is supposed to break the surface tension of the gas bubbles in the beef's stomach.
