Ben H had a difficult week. He tells of having to put down an old cow. Some may pass it off as just an old cow. Some may think of the advice of loving wife, forgiving children, doing neither for your cows, but Ben H was remembering a club calf that he had broke to lead, come to love and together they had walked away with the purple ribbon. This animal was Grand Champion to him even before the judges had recognized her worth. Then the body that had once enabled her to kick up her heels, romp and play now held her prisoner. Ben did what he had to because she was his, and he loved her. We hesitate to say he loved her because love is the word we use for God, our wife, children and family, but what word can we use. It must be stronger than when we say "I like ice cream." Life gives us hard things to do; things we would never chose to do. These experiences give us a deeper understanding of God. One of these days when my body is wore out; when life holds more pain than pleasure, the Master who loves me, the one that I have come to love, trust, and tried to serve will come and take me. Do not misunderstand; I am not hoping for that day, but I am placing my hope in that day! Have yourselves a good Sunday Mornin' and a great rest of the week too. And Ben H, we do relate.

Thanks, Shortgrass, for keeping everything in perspective. Sorry about your cow, Ben H. Hope you both have a great week anyway, and may everyone else have a wonderful week, too. Today is first day of the rest of our life. :-)

Amen! Death defeated by our savior, Jesus Christ!

Well said about Ben H's difficult but necessary task this week.

Thanks Shortgrass. I think any rancher can relate to the experience of Ben H. Whether it's a faithful dog or horse, or other livestock "pets" we do care about the animals we are entrusted with caring for. The idiots at PETA and other organizations like that would never understand.

We used to milk cows and seperate the milk and cream. The skim milk went to the hogs and we sold the cream. Every milk cow we had was named and was special. Each one with a unique personality in her own way. Mostly Guernsey breeding with some black Angus thrown in.

Had one Brown Swiss cow that my grandmother had given as a weaned calf to my folks as a wedding gift. It was a sad day when she left the place at age 17. That is a long full life for a cow.
