A lot of small grasshoppers are making their appearance here now. No the large yellow ones with wings that fly in or come with the wind, but small light colored ones about 1/2 to 3/4 inches long. I believe they must have hatched here. I believe that an unbalance in their food suuply especially during a drought causes grass hoppers to move. We had lots of rain last August, a dry September, then more moisture than normal on October. I believe grashopper moved in here to lay their eggs.
Now I see huge flocks of blackbirds in the hay fields. I don't know which species they are small but not real dark black. There are a few Yellow Heads among them but no Red wings or Grackles. They must be after the grasshoppers. Often we see flocks of blackbirds later in the fall that invade milo or millet fields, but these are much larger flocks.
