Thought you would like to know that out of 8 calves so far the Bear Mark bull we got from you sired all but 2 of them.
1 heifer bull calf and 1 Churchill bull calf.

Now we know why calving was so slow last year.

thanks for the update! can't wait to start calving here - but we need to warm up in a hurry. i want to move cows to a half section calving pasture on the 15th but its still over half knee deep snow with a heavy layer of ice under it - not a bare spot out there yet. everyone i talk to says its flooding all around except to the east, but it just won't break here. drove to valier the other weekend and it was 25 degrees warmer than at home, to big sandy the day after and same story. if it doesn't change quick i think i might just start calving on stubble right close to the corrals and move them as it breaks. i'm starting to wonder if i shouldn't just calve the heifers in the corrals this year instead of out with the cows... don't want to do it very bad but it might be worth the work if i just would save one darn calf from freezing... a guy thinks he has it figured out and then! not going to complain - winters with snow make the difference between a year and a good grass year here.

good luck on your calving - let me know if the start of April will still work to bring down your new bull - no biggie if you'd like him out of your hair for awhile longer. by the way - might have to try and persuade you to maybe let me use that bull down the road.

lost a set of twins that were out of Bear the other day. I was disappointed. Could have raised one either on my milk cow or on another cow that might have lost a calf.
A good 10 year old cow that had twins back in '08.
We can really tell who sired which calf. Will have go out and get some pictures of the calves.
Got 2 bull calves this morning and they are out of the Churchill bull.

was 60 here the other day and then yesterday it was 28. Went to Great Falls and about half way there hit the chinook.
Hope you get it soon.

We were discussing our breeding plan yesterday. Gotta get the well in one pasture tested and see about putting which bull in there with certain cows. Will see what happens this fall.

I think we should all take a moment and be very appreciative of the fact that we are not getting all the government we are paying for.

here are some of the calves.

Chris- thats pure mean... Putting up pictures with no snow in them  :P

Today the sun is shining- temp around 30- geese going over...We even saw a couple gophers sitting on the top of about 3 foot high snow drifts...

Calves look nice... Are you noticing any difference in birthweights this year? We've only had a few out of some cows- but the BW's are running 5-10 Lbs heavier than the previous 2 years... Bred to same bulls....I'm figuring it must have been the tough winter....

I haven't had any heifers calve yet- but it makes me nervous...The good thing is that even tho the ones born so far are heavier- they have a very good CE build....

Sorry Dick. you're really going to hate me. I was feeding the cows in my short sleeve shirt tonight. Once the wind went down boy did it warm up. Thermometer read 63 here today. In the direct sun it was reading 73.

Only difference we have noticed is between the 2 bulls. The Churchill bull's calves are right where they were last year 86-88#'s. We had put the Bear bull out much later the year before so we only had a couple of his calves to compare to and they were pretty late for our breeding.
the ones we have gotten so far are 76-79#'s
