July 2, 1916 to April 28, 1991. I never knew Ken Curtis was a 6 footer, according to Wikipedia. One of my favorite parts, besides Festus, he played was Seaborn Tay in Conagher.

I got to send some time and have a drink with him @ the Cow Place Rodeo in 1970's something.
I BELIEVE he was a member of the Original "Riders of the Purple Sage"...

It was the "Sons of the Pioneers"- which at one time included Roy Rogers-- and the major movie they are best remembered for performing in is Rio Grande- where they serenade Col. Yorkes (John Wayne) wife (Maureen O'Hara).... Another one of the great John Ford movies- where PRCA 1953 World Champion and Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer Ben Johnson was one of the great character actors-- again was "Tyree" and one of the best real cowboys that performed in movies...
He and Slim Pickens both were real cowboys and two of my most favored actors....

In the Late 50's Ben Johnson use to stop overnight @ the Milas Hotel in Gilroy (75 Miles from San Francisco - a days drive in those days) - I was in charge of the "Gymkhana" Rodeo Grounds and also had a 3 stall barn on the edge of town - I'd keep his horse if he had one - - He also used MY HORSE in the Movie "One Eyed Jacks" in Carmel

Two of my roommates and I were talking to Slim Pickens at the Cow Palace when he got hit from behind by a BULL - it was as if someone had kicked a football - I saw him again when I was a Wrangler on the Santa Barbra Ride. Years later I saw him again at a Aussie Dog Show in Sonora - He knew my name right off...

The First time I meet Slim was at the Rex Allen Rodeo at Wilcox Arizona in 1958 - We slept on the ground at the Rodeo Grounds the first night - When Rex learn the 3 of us were GI's he invited us to a Part at his house - meet Slim there.

Jaquan Sanches another up and coming Rodeo Clown was there also - He got killed in Tehachapi Ca. a few years later when he walked our of a Bar into the Highway:(

I happened across this picture of Ben Johnson...Thought folks might like to see it since we were discussing him earlier in this thread ...

Did you know they called Slim Pickens brother Easy Pickens? :D

Nope- never did.. The first I saw Slim Pickens was back in the 50's-- when he was fighting bulls/clowning dressed as a matador at the Wolf Point Stampede....

Thanks to Wikipedia " Pickens' brother, Samuel T. Lindley, acted under the name Easy Pickens. His most notable appearance was as "Easy" in Sam Peckinpah's The Ballad of Cable Hogue."

I will have to watch for him next time that's on encore westerns. :D
