After god knows how many miles-practices and games -I watched Ty play perhaps his last game of hockey today. We lost a two game total goal series against the number two team in the league by one goal. Having a bit of a tough time with it-I remember a little 5 year old dressing in the van and me carrying him into the rink so he could get on the ice sooner. Two other boys I coached pretty much all their life had their last game today but with Ty probably heading south to rodeo he actually might be done. He's got some Jr. A tryouts but no sense going if your not going to be able to commit to the team. I'm pretty sure the Canadians on here will know the feeling-it's not a good one.

Sorry Pal - have to strongly disagree with you. And I have those T-shirts - so I can talk about this straight up.

You had a life time of opportunity with your kid and some other good ones as well - you are feeling sorry for yourself.

So go kick yourself in the ash - you had some good times that others never had - even though they might have wanted to do this - opportunity or events prevented it.

You raised your kids right and were lucky to boot - as good people can have bad kids and bad people can have good kids.

You are an old S.O.B. - but it looks like your kids turned out all right - and you have had a positive effect on others as well.

So you can suck the hind tit in self pity or step out and hold your head high

I know which one I would do.

We need a lot more folks like you out there - and when you are long gone those kids will tell their kids about you - what more could you ask for?

A job well done - now you step out into a new adventure in life - and who knows where it will take you?

Congrats and cheers

Of course I'm feeling sorry for myself-I've got a pretty bad hockey addiction-still got my Emily in PeeWee's.

Then you have a few more years - my oldest daughter played in Europe and still talks about it.

Now, go out side and howl at the moon.

Well Corey, maybe BC doesn't feel your pain but I do!!!!!!! I missed, still miss watching my son play hockey, memories were made, and those memories are hard to leave.....SAME goes for my daughter in 4-H....I just miss my kids little  I DO love them grown though...they're my best friends!!!

I NEED to get those grandboys playing hockey

Before you know it you will have moved on and have all the great memories. You will be able to embellish when passing the stories on to the grand kids. Life will still be good. :)

If it is such and addiction why are you giving up??????
How many kids still need an adult to help guide them and be their coach?
uummm HELLO stay involved

sorry I agree you and whinning dont belong together

One little factoid-nobody has ever accused me of whining to my face-especially in a hockey context lol. I'll be coaching for alot of years don't worry. I never said I was giving up I said I was going to miss watching my son play-if that bothers some it sucks to be you.

I hear you, Northern. There are times when we know we have turned not a page but finished a chapter in our kids lives and we know how much we will miss some of the commitments and routines established in those times. Long drives together, times spent rehashing certain parts of a game or event - things that were not necessarily huge on their own, but played a significantly formative part in our lives as family. Good memories, but hard to let go of the realities that made them good!!

Best wishes to you and yours in the changes that will inevitably come.

My 12 year old got his first hat trick in his last game on Friday. Of course he will play a few more years. It's the same feeling his dad gets when he swings an eagle.
